Maybe I'm just an old curmudgeon now, but this has to be the worst show in 20 years. It seems random and disjointed. The trumpet solo in the Ballerina tune is completely unnecessary, and the whole show is just one breakneck tempo of forgettable tunes. Change my mind.

Maybe I'm just an old curmudgeon now, but this has to be the worst show in 20 years. It seems random and disjointed. The trumpet solo in the Ballerina tune is completely unnecessary, and the whole show is just one breakneck tempo of forgettable tunes. Change my mind. I wouldn't call it the worst, but it's certainly forgettable. I told my wife (who agreed with my assessment) it's probably incredible to watch in person, but that's because of the Southerners' raw power rattling your rib cage. (That's a given every year.) But watching the show on video is less than thrilling this year. The *performance* of the band members is awesome. Absolutely no complaints there. It's the *show* that's "meh". It's a personal, subjective opinion. It's like some people love "Cats" and some people hate it. The performance of the cast has nothing to do with your love of the show. I just happen to not be a fan of "Interstellar Suite" and "Go the Distance". Never have been. This isn't the first time I've been let down by the repertoire (or the arrangements) and it won't be the last. I don't hold it against the Southerners. Even Aaron Judge isn't batting 1.000. The key for Judge (and for the Southerners) is that when contact is made, it's worth it. Forgive me for bringing the Yankees into this. God, I hate them.

It is as powerful as ever. I am waiting to see it another time or two before passing judgement otherwise. It is definitely better than 2015.

I should have mentioned that the Southerners sound great. Always do by at least week 2! It's just repetitive writing and arranging. I can hear callbacks from several previous shows.

We're still hoping to get to a show this season. Even without a kid playing high school ball now, it's harder than it should be to get up that way.
My lack of enthusiasm for this year's repertoire has in no way dampened by enthusiasm to see Southerners live.
One last thing I'd like to add to my earlier post, if I didn't make it clear: I wish it were more acceptable to offer critiques of the show without fearing repercussions from the fan base. I mean, I'm not talking about personal attacks on the performers -- "The sarrusophone soloist fracks every freaking time! Can't we find a sarrusophonist who doesn't SUCK!!!" or "Boy, the Ballerina on the 25-yard line during 'El Ganado Vacuno' likes to eat, doesn't she?!" -- I'm talking about honest criticisms of the show.
It's not a new thing, nor is it limited to Southerners. I remember people being crucified on rec.arts.drumcorps back in the way, wayback for saying such horrific things as "Man, the Blue Devils' closer just didn't do it for me this year."
They'd instantly be attacked by folks self-righteously screaming, "HOW DARE YOU CRITICIZE THESE KIDS!!! THEY'RE WORKING SO HAAAARRRRRD!!!!!"
Gah.
I mean, I know we CAN do it here, just as we CAN do it on the old GJS Southerners board... it's just when you do it, you feel like someone's going to take personal offense. Hell, I marched plenty of years where I wasn't enthused by the show. If someone tells me they felt the 1997 show was visually lacking, my response is, "Yep. It sure was," not "HOW DARE YOU!!!"
Rant over, I guess. You guys have a nice day.

This years show does seem to be lacking in cohesion, and doesn’t really take you on an emotional journey. Musically you can only do so much with pop tunes, which comprise a significant portion of the show.
The drill is basically movement for the sake of movement. It’s the same couple of moves, over and over.
The band sounds great and the members are executing the show they have been given.
The product may not be up to the standard we have come to expect, and that standard is very high.
Blow Southerners!!!

Saw the Southerners at their Albertville exhibition today. The addition of Jupiter really pulls the show together. I was on the fence before, but now I’m on board. Blow Southerners.

Can't believe they changed The Ballerina outfits. I guess Tradition means nothing anymore.

Can't believe they changed The Ballerina outfits. I guess Tradition means nothing anymore. Did they not have the Santa suits at Homecoming? They've been wearing different outfits for shows for decades. They wore the Santas during the Homecoming parade, and during "Future Ballerina Day" activities, but wore the different outfits for the postgame show. This is no different than any game since 2000, when the Ballerinas debuted their first major style change for the exhibition show. (The first show with a departure from the traditional Santa uniform was '98, but that one was subtle. They still wore the tassled boots with that uniform. The 2000 change replaced the boots with modern dance shoes. In both cases, they kept the traditional Santas for parades and stuff.)

I just watched the show for the first time.
It is easily my favorite show in a LONG time. The music and drill were superb. I got goosebumps multiple times watching the show.
It just goes to show that different people have different preferences.

It's better than what was presented the first couple of weeks but the program needs new creative input.
