The lesson learned is rushing yards are winning yards. Run the damn ball.

Not a bad first year. Need more players for FBS. 15 or so spots available plus seniors and attrition.

Not a bad first year. Need more players for FBS. 15 or so spots available plus seniors and attrition. There could very well be 30-40 new players on next years roster. We REALLY need more size and depth on the DL. C-USA here we come. Go JSU Gamecocks!!!!

Not factoring in any new arrivals -- and assuming we take no blindside hits during the offseason -- we should be competitive with the middle of the CUSA pack next year. Not bottom-feeders, but not really "contenders" either. Games against WKU and Liberty may be hard to watch, but otherwise, win or lose, we shouldn't embarrass ourselves, and we should win a few.
That's honestly right where we need to be during the transition season. The more W's the more better, of course, but at the end of the day, we just want to establish ourselves as a solid program. If we somehow pull off 6 wins, even if we're ineligible for bowls, it'll catch everyone's attention. But anywhere in the vicinity of .500 means we're in a pretty good place for our first year. Just for perspective, JMU is sitting at 7 wins in their first year, with one game remaining (a probable loss against #23 Coastal).
Steel yourselves, though. If the Gamecocks finish 5-7, we'll hear choruses of "Rich Rod can't get it done in FBS" from a certain segment of "fans". A few who think they're especially bright will say, "We fired John Grass for a single losing season. Why should Rich Rod get a pass?"
Some of these are the same people who question why Ray Harper hasn't turned us into Gonzaga. You can't really change their thinking. Just don't let it catch you off guard. It's coming.

High expectations dont bother me. Hope our fans are always a little unrealistic.

If we had a good veteran QB I'd say wed do much better than .500 However it takes time and experience to break in a new QB. Unless the portal fairys bring us something unexpected and spectacular for Christmas.

High expectations dont bother me. Hope our fans are always a little unrealistic. It's not the high expectations that bother me. It's when a fan calls for a coach's head on a platter because that fan doesn't understand the concept that moving up to a higher subdivision means the competition is much better*. (Or for hoops, thinking that the OVC or ASUN champ should be on even footing with the SEC, ACC, or Big 12 champ.) My expectation for the gridiron Gamecocks in 2023 is for them to finish around .500. I WANT them to finish 12-0. I'll only question our coaching (in 2023) if we finish 2-10 or worse, and most of those losses are blowouts, or the games that were lost were given away due to stupid coaching (or coachable) mistakes. My standards will of course be higher from 2024 on. * A reminder that even the lowest levels of G5 are roughly equivalent to the Top 5 of FCS. JSU beat a miserably awful FIU team in 2020, but had to play lights out ball to do it. We won't see too many "UNAs" even at the bottom of CUSA.

As long as the university leaders arent unrealistic not too concerned about unreasonable fans. Just dont let yellow wood on the board.

I'm mentally prepared for a one win season as a worst case scenario. Anything other than that is gravy.

I'm gonna be very sore at one win. I don't think 500 is too much to ask. Also I think G5 is probably more like the top 25 in fcs.

500 is the mark. JMU beat several team easily and their program was just a few notches above JSU in FCS. We have also had an additional year to recruit with the knowledge you will be playing FBS football.

I'm gonna be very sore at one win. I don't think 500 is too much to ask. Also I think G5 is probably more like the top 25 in fcs. The very, very bottom of G5 might be equivalent to the very bottom of the Top 25. (Of course, any given year you might have a particularly terrible team stinking up the G5 ranks... not saying ALL G5s are FCS Top 25 caliber ALL the time.) My point still stands... even "below average" teams at the G5 level are stronger than most teams we've had to face in the regular season over the past 20-30 years in FCS. We're an above average FCS team, which means we SHOULD be around the middle of the pack in G5. Solid G5 teams are equivalent to FCS Top 10. Arguably Top 5. Really, really good G5 teams are at or slightly above the "NDSU" level of FCS eliteness. That's why JMU did so well coming out of the gate... they weren't an average FCS team. They were NDSU-elite. The number of teams in that group, especially with the Dukes gone, is very, very small. "Top 5" doesn't cut it. Look how many times over the past decade NDSU has rolled into the championship game to face a Top 3 opponent, and steamrolled them in the NC game. (It happened to us, and we're not alone.) Even if CUSA is a "weak" league -- and it's not -- JSU will have a hard time winning the conference out of the gate. Now, add SHSU and Liberty to the picture. We've got our work cut out for us. I don't want to diminish any of the wins or titles the Gamecocks achieved in the OVC and ASUN. We always had at least one other team (sometimes 2-3) who could've whupped us if we weren't at our best. Those championships mean something. None of them came easy. It's just that in CUSA, we won't have any "weeks off" to the same degree. I used UNA as a (bad) example, only because they're the weakest in the ASUN. But in the OVC the lower half of the conference was always, reliably awful (in football and in hoops). That won't be the case for CUSA. The level of competition will rise more than many casual fans expect.
