Smothers would be a solid pickup, if that's who it is. After getting a start in 2021 as a RS-freshman against No. 17 Iowa (16-of-22 for 198 yards; 24 carries for 64 yards and 2 TDs) under then-head coach Scott Frost, he never was able to really crack the two-deep for the Huskers under new head coach Matt Rhule, getting most of his touches late in the game or as a result of injuries ahead of him, but no one doubts his ability.
A true dual-threat player with a solid arm and legit 4.5 speed in the 40. Coming out of Muscle Shoals HS, he was ranked 3 stars by 247Sports and ESPN, and 4 stars by Rivals.
He has 2 years of eligibility remaining.
FYI, he follows the entire Jax State coaching staff on Twitter. So we have a shot.

He’s also a typical CRR QB. Very quick and an average passer. I do think he would be a good pick up.

This would explain the football admin's excitement on Twitter yesterday. The only commitment I found yesterday was a D2 guy. A P5 QB makes more sense.

Granted, the D-II guy is a great pickup. But he's an undersized speed demon with (apparently) reliable hands entering a very crowded WR room. Not exactly the kind of signing the coaching staff would be giddy about. I've seen a few intriguing QB prospects on the Portal. Not too many from Alabama, but a couple from GA and at least one from Mississippi. Not sure how many fit the Hot Rod offense, but we do appear to have some solid options. Have we heard yet if Zion Webb got his extra year?

Usually this page is pretty accurate updated.

It would be good to get an experienced QB. Of the 5 on the Roster 4 are freshman and one is a sophomore.

(I can't speak for any of the young guys ... just looking at starters.) His arm is really solid. Not sure about strength, but he puts it where he wants it. And he doesn't mind doing it with a linebacker in his face. From what I've read, he easily would've been in the running for the starter position at Nebraska if Scott Frost hadn't been fired, and maybe even if he hadn't been injured when the new coaching staff came in. As it is, he fell off a cliff in the new staff's minds and was unable to catch their attention again. (Probably nothing to do with talent and everything to do with getting their own people in.) And for what it's worth, Cornhusker fans absolutely freaking love Smothers. I'm very happy with our QB room at the moment -- lots of young, unproven talent in there -- but adding Smothers to the mix just takes it up a notch. If he can do what I think he'll be able to do leading the Hot Rod offense, the next couple seasons should be fun as heck.

As long as the coaches play the best one in the locker room, I will be satisficed. Just hope the best one is good.
