Huge academic news, Doctorate of Education being established. This program is long overdue and was moving forward until the last President stopped it in it's tracks. Great news.

I also like the BoT's other decision today to change the names of the "Schools" to "Colleges".
This paves the way for them to rename "Departments" to "Schools".
Don't think it matters?
Just ask yourself which sounds more prestigious...
The Dr. David L. Walters Department of Music
or
The Dr. David L. Walters School of Music

Is there some sort of standard that you have to meet to have colleges or is it just wanting to look fancy?

Is there some sort of standard that you have to meet to have colleges or is it just wanting to look fancy? I don't really get how it opens JSU up to more grants, but at the end of the day, yeah, it's totally all about looking fancy and pretentious. Only thing is, it matters. You're recruiting (for academics, not athletics) 16-17 year old kids. They're explicitly and implicitly being taught by guidance counselors, teachers, relatives, friends, and perhaps most importantly, movies and TV shows that a scholarship to the Alistair P. Hallindorf School of Business at Alstonhaven University is far more valuable than a scholarship to the business department at the local state college. It doesn't matter if the local college's business department is ranked nationally, and the only Hallindorf alumnus in town is a barista at your neighborhood Starbucks. It's marketing. And kids are easily duped. This is part of the reason why schools like that one down in Pike County dropped "State" from their names. And why the State Teachers College at Harrisonburg is now known as James Madison University. I don't endorse this game of pretense. But this is one rare case where, if everyone else is playing, we should probably join them.

I've been to interviews where interviewers have asked if JSU is an online school. We've come so far.
