I went down a bit of a rabbit hole over the weekend, looking for social media posts, blog posts, and news stories about Coach Rod.
Here are the takeaways:
1) A LARGE percentage of WVU fans want him back.
2) Many Arizona fans feel he was not only wrongly fired, but that he was hamstrung by their administration. (In fairness, others believe everything they've read.)
3) I saved this one for last, because it's most relevant to this post: A HUGE number of Michigan fans (many of whom had thrown in the towel on Harbaugh -- this was in the 2019/2020 time frame) not only wanted Coach Rod back, but felt the university had made a terrible mistake in firing him. As with Arizona, there are a sizeable number of fingers pointed squarely at the UM administration and Wolverine power brokers, who never bought into the Hot Rod spread. He was unable to land his preferred DC and struggled with the ones he did hire. (That might have been the killer right there.)
The key is, across the board, with all his supporters and even the majority of his critics, everyone agrees on this:
1) Coach Rod's offense will light up the scoreboard.
2) Coach Rod needs a DC he trusts and whom he has a solid working relationship with. Rich Rod is not the kind of coach who you can just plug and play with any DC, no matter how stellar the guy's resume. Maybe he's too much of a micromanager? But the DC is the most important hire he makes. If he hires the right guy, we'll win big for as long as we can keep him. If he doesn't land the right guy, we'll allow about as many points as we score.
It's kind of funny that Coach Rod never found a home in the Big 12, where "defense" is an unknown concept...
One more note about Coach Rod... several of his harshest game-time critics have said his biggest issue is that he recruits the kind of offensive players he won with at WVU. Undersized, but fast. When he was hired at Michigan, they thought he'd suddenly recruit guys who were big and fast... but that didn't happen. In the Big Ten, his undersized teams took a pounding from bigger teams like Wisconsin and Ohio State. Even though the Wolverines were still able to score points in buckets, by the end of the season, they were just beat up.
So it appears he has a ceiling in college football. He's not a Big Ten coach. He's not an SEC coach. He's not a Pac 12 coach.
But he just might be in his element at the G5 level.
He just needs to make the right hire on defense. I guess we'll know something after the holidays.

So I talked to a couple friends of mine up here who have been lifelong Michigan fans (Michigan fans in Michigan? Shocker, I know) when we hired Rich Rod and they echoed a similar sentiment. It wasn't that RichRod was a bad coach, it's that he and the University just weren't a good fit for each other. But I also know a guy who thinks Rich Rod is the worst thing to ever happen to the Wolverines. So there's definitely varying opinions. After talking to people and doing my own reading I tend to lean to the "he just wasn't a good fit" option. That said, I agree. We will live or die by this DC hire.

We have our football S&C coach. He's crazy young, but he comes to us from LSU, so maybe he's learned something important.
I won't lie... I always liked Gavin Hallford and hoped he'd get the call here. But sometimes new blood is needed, I guess.

Rodriguez, who took over as the Gamecocks' head coach on Nov. 30, announced the hiring of Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator Calvin Magee, who adds to a list of staff additions that have been made over the past three weeks. Magee joins offensive line coach Rick Trickett, running backs coach Rod McDowell, offensive assistant Ryan Garrett and assistant coach Mike DiAngelo, while Chief of Staff Dusty Rutledge, Director of Football Operations Cole Dial and Director of Recruiting Kurt Kennedy have been on staff since Rodriguez's first week in Jacksonville. He also recently hired Blake McCall as the Gamecocks' Strength and Conditioning Coach.

It concerns me of the long history many of them have. It feels a little phone a friend or good ole boyish. Let’s hope not.

At the FBS level the coaches usually pull former staff members with them. Nothing new. Gotta trust HCRR is building the right staff based on his connections and their experience.

It should be RichRods choice of who he hires. Unsuccessful staff, RichRod gets fired. Let him make his bed and sleep in it.

I'd much rather have a staff that works well together and has a history than one cobbled together from Piedmont residents who've been coasting at their jobs for 20 years. And nobody is going to leave a decent position at a P5 program to come here.

Please be realistic here. This is what us JSU like to do. These are crazy statements. Rich Rod was OC at ULM, thats not saying much. I am glad he is here but everything above is ridiculous. Honestly: What has Rich Rod done other than Slaton and that team? Really nothing.
