Don't know what money basketball gets. But football hasn't been flowing with money during the Grass era. That building is terrible, ie getting a new facility. Doesn't basketball have a new practice gym and renovated locker room along with the remodeled Pete? Opinion of the perception of the new C-USA men's basketball programs: 1. WKU 2. MTSU 3. NMSU 4. UTEP 5. Liberty (on the way up) 6. La Tech 7. JSU 8. FIU 9. SHSU This can vary quite a bit, but JSU will be viewed mostly around 6 or 7. Believe it or not, our football budget is bigger than North Dakota State's.

WKU, UTEP and NMSUs history will make it hard for JSU too pass. JSU will need one hell of a run and in multiple years. Liberty's money will be tough to overcome but not as hard as those listed above. 4th may be our ceiling in CUSA with 5th the realistic top. Need to move to the SBC if you want a higher conference historical rank.

This post is ridiculous. We were never down by 20. We lost the game by 6 on the road to a top 10 team. The team showed a lot of fight. Forgive me for thinking a team that was down 14 after a 18-2 run and showing exactly no signs of life with 5 to go was en route for a 20 point loss. We threw that game away. We keep throwing games away. It's getting old. And don't come at me with "iTs bAsKeTbAlL". If we were in this for moral victories we'd still have Grass as HFBC. Looks like someone is here just to stir the pot.

The comparison to Grass is not accurate imo. Grass had a lot more to work with... building our basketball program will take a long time and we are a people in the age of instant gratification. It is easy to forget how bad we were for literally decades. We had exactly 4 seasons finishing above .500, and one 20 win season (2002) since going D1 in 1995. Harper has won 20 games 3 out of 5 seasons, and had just one under .500. To me he is a miracle worker...but to build us into a consistent program that reloads without coaches having to work to death in order to recruit talent others miss will take a decade of winning. We have to be on the radar of student athletes in the way VCU and Wichita State are in order to build consistency as a mid-major, and even those teams have down seasons. McCarthy and Capel had 8 seasons similar to what we are doing now before Grant took TCU to the next level. There was 9-10 years of Mark Turgeon and Gregg Marshall having similar results before Wichita took off. Losing a close game to a top 10 team is a moral victory... I hate moral victories too... but it should pay off in the conference games. I was much more upset about the loss to USA, but it happens. I trust our basketball program is in good hands. The three best seasons we have had since 1995 came in the last 5 seasons.

AMEN & AMEN!!! That's why you're KING GAMECOCK. OUR BASKETBALL PROGRAM IS IN GREAT HANDS. MATTER OF TIME. Never forget --- A Coach is only as good as his last game... comes with the profession.

I think moving to FBS will help basketball at some level. We are a football-first school and that isn’t changing. But now we are in what is perceived as a “real” D1 conference.
And I don’t want non-football in the league. Doesn’t mean I hate basketball, I just want everyone on the same page. I don’t want a football-only member, does that mean I hate football?
Not saying FBS will make us a Sweet 16 contender. But it won’t hurt. When we hire our next coach, a Ray Harper type should be our floor and not the ceiling.

Basketball success has a lot to do with recruiting. As recognition goes up recruiting will also. With that being said Alabama recruits very well but usually stinks.

I think moving to FBS will help basketball at some level. We are a football-first school and that isn’t changing. But now we are in what is perceived as a “real” D1 conference. Not only is CUSA perceived as a "real" conference (especially for hoops), but even after losing strong teams like UAB, the projected NET and KenPom rankings of the "new" CUSA put it ahead of the American. Addition by subtraction. We stepped up slightly in competition going from the old OVC to the new ASUN, but there was no change in prestige. (It may have even gone down, since most normal folks aren't motivated to calculate projected conference rankings.) CUSA is a big step up in both. We need to be ready. Lucky for us, Coach Harper is intimately familiar with CUSA. We're in good hands.

Today's game is an example of a game this team needs to win to get some respectability. Let's hope this isn't another USA, Troy, Valpo.
Limited seats available!
UPDATE....Glad for the win. UALR isn't very good. Once again JSU with a slow, slow start.

Nice 20 point win on the road. Now we get a couple of easy wins before Bellarmine comes into town.
