www.si.com/college/2022/01/20/ncaa-future-power-5-football-basketball-moneyMy emphasis added... The full story goes into the many, many, many complicating factors of a "D-I split", including March Madness, and... well, that's the big one. Anyway, it's a long article. So basically, if this happens, for football at least, P5 would effectively become Division I. G5 would effectively become Division I-AA. No idea where this would leave FCS. But you can bet your bottom dollar, there'd be a lot of falling dominoes.

Wonder if it is the conferences choice or some other way of deciding which level they play? If each one does their own choosing, I hope CUSA goes the highest route possible. TV money and viewers will go to the highest level and the others will be left out.

May not now but the new level will provide it or the others will not survive. This will be similar to the last split. In just a little while everyone will be trying to get back to "FBS".

The cycle of life. The last split didn’t really provide for the money to keep up either that’s the reason for another split. A few of us saw this coming which was the reason to make the jump to fbs so as to not become division 2 Keeping up with the top schools is like living next to bill gates. You ain’t got all that but you live in the same neighborhood. I’d prefer the g5 separate and maintain an amateur structure as near and as long as possible. Let uat Pursue a semi pro model while Jax St remains a true college football.

Cleburneslim has been on this for quite awhile.
Saw this tweet today: -------------------------------------------
Adam Rittenberg @espnrittenberg · 3h Productive week of conversations in Arizona. Thanks to @scottleightman for the great hospitality.
My biggest takeaway: Movement for Power 5 or most of FBS to branch off is stronger than ever. Will happen. Everyone is fed up with the inability to govern.

A few thoughts about the split as related to realignment. If this actually sinks in for schools. There’ll be a real push to move. UTC? For conferences. There is no need to rush, plenty of teams will want to not be left behind. Also will whole conferences be allowed to move?
What definately needs to happen is that the ncaa should disband. At this point it is a toothless tiger who has abandoned its responsibilities and authority to the others. A new independent unbiased organization needs to be formed without ties to any school or conference. Yet we all know how impossible it is to find an good referee. This would be further complicated by the apparent willingness for government and the courts to insert itself.

Glad we moved up before the great schism happens, assuming it does. Who knows what the barrier to entry will be moving forward.

Thanks to @scottleightman for the great hospitality. My biggest takeaway: Movement for Power 5 or most of FBS to branch off is stronger than ever. Will happen. Everyone is fed up with the inability to govern."Power 5 or most of FBS" ... the second part of that phrase can mean a lot of different things. If it splits by existing conference, I think it'd be more of a "P6" split, with the AAC joining their deep-pocketed brethren. But there are teams scattered around some other G5 conferences (we'll call the remaining ones "G4") who could keep up with those deep pockets. That's where the intrigue will be. If the "G4" conferences fracture, the ensuing chaos will make Realignment Apocalypse 1.0 look positively calm and orderly. The MAC will stay just as it is now. I don't see those schools moving up, and I don't think expansion suits them. The MWC will lose some schools, and possibly reach into CUSA West to grab UTEP or NMSU as replacements. CUSA East could lose MTSU, FIU, and/or WKU. La Tech is unlikely. Liberty will want to move, but I think they may have hit their ceiling at the "G4" level. (The Falwell legacy is hard to shake, but beyond that, Lynchburg isn't exactly a metropolis.) The Sun Belt could potentially lose several schools. At that point, one of two things will happen: either the remaining schools in CUSA and SBC will merge, or there'll be a wave of call-ups from FCS. Since the FCS pickin's are slim, I think a merger is very much in the cards. It won't necessarily be one mega-conference. I think instead, you'll see two (perhaps three, if the numbers support it) regional conferences form from the debris. (Another reason why I think the MAC will stay put... their quaint "bus league" philosophy will be the new norm at this redefined subdivision.) Some of the current G5 schools with hyper-inflated egos will hate this outcome. But for the rest of us, and especially for JSU, it could be great. For current FCS teams, I hate it for them, but I think most of them will find themselves back in a more expensive version of "D-II".

I am gonna disagree. Of course this is all conjecture. But. I think the p5 will become the p4. Sec acc b10 and something with what is currently the pac and b12. Possibly Only possibly, this is your merger.
The sec will add more they are the big dogs along with the b10 so these two will add whomever they want out of the best teams Leaving the other three grasping for a semblance of their past glory but lacking the schools that brought it. There will be a clear separation between these two and the other 3. One of these three will remain in the drivers seat and add from the other two. I’m guessing the b12 is done for raided to death by the acc and pac 12. And viola P4. This leaves the b12 decimating the aac and as the story goes IT rolls down hill
There is no reason after the split for the new semi pro league to share revenues with those who didn’t cut the mustard. They will take their ball and move on. Leaving the G6 to figure out what to do now. Hopefully we make enough of a splash as to not be stuck in the conference that’s trying to survive off the flood of fcs schools suddenly trying to move up.
Is there any reason the top conference won’t have 24 teams?

I am gonna disagree. Of course this is all conjecture. But. I think the p5 will become the p4. Sec acc b10 and something with what is currently the pac and b12. Possibly Only possibly, this is your merger. The PAC-12 will absolutely be part of this. They may be terrible in football nowadays, and a shadow of their former selves in hoops, but they've got money to burn and egos as big as their bank accounts. They won't be left behind. The B12 is in a far more precarious position. They're grandfathered into anything the NCAA does, but if the P5/4 break away from the NCAA, all bets are off. You may be right about them being raided to death. Once the (remaining) top teams are picked off, the B12 will be on par with the AAC. No higher. And since they won't have "P5" status to sell, I'm not sure they'll be successful in poaching AAC schools. That leaves: "P4" breakaway league - SEC, B10, AAC, and P12 "G6" NCAA league - B12 remnants, AAC, CUSA, Sun Belt, MWC, MAC There'll be some reshuffling in the G6, probably to create more balanced, regional conferences. The MAC won't change much, remaining a rust belt bus league. The Sun Belt will trend toward an eastern Appalachian/Atlantic Coastal conference. CUSA will shift toward a Deep South/western Appalachian conference. The B12 and MWC will fight over teams in the Rockies, Southwest, and Plains states. Not sure how that will look when they're done. And then there's the AAC, which, honestly, just doesn't fit anywhere. Those schools are mostly all in major metros and have a crap ton of cash compared to the other G6's. But they're not really powerful enough to be included with the P4 in this scenario. And let's not forget the elephant in the room: All of the above speculation, including my previous post, is rooted in FOOTBALL. I have absolutely no idea how they're going to reconcile any of this with basketball and other sports (but mostly basketball). The kind folks behind March Madness will not be too keen on leaving their Summit, WCC, and AAC Cinderellas behind, and then there's the Big East, which is clearly a "P5" in hoops. This is such a freaking mess. Under the current NCAA financial structure, it comes down to money. But the breakaway league won't be bound by any of the current constraints, so you could wind up with a league of a few super-conferences at the highest level. Down in "G6" though, I think 12-14 is going to be the cap. Maybe 16, if some non-football schools are included, but I just don't think there'll be a benefit to splitting the pie too many ways. None of these conferences are going to command big TV money. Not even the AAC.

There are going to be teams in Power 5 Conferences that get the boot eventually so we have a super league.

You misunderstand that won’t be the remnant b12. That’s is the current b12. What we’re talking about is the ones after the other conferences get done picking who they want. Perhaps many of these will be pac 12 schools some to the b10 etc. leaving the b12 to reload from the MWC and or acc etc… and down the hill it goes.

There'll be some reshuffling in the G6, probably to create more balanced, regional conferences.
Perhaps but there is always the sticky problem that the “quality” team you want or need may not be geographical while the geographic team may stink. And every thing is similar to what it is now. The MAC seems to have settled for their place in the pecking order financially and athletically in favor or a tight regional conference will the AAC and previously CUSA went the other direction. Perhaps Cusa will try to tighten things up now.
As for basketball I believe will remain the same as it has been unless the G6 withdraws from it. But perhaps the breakaway group will attempt to form its own tourney in an attempt to outpace the current ncaa tourney. It will likely succeed at some point since they have all the money and espn will likely carry their water. Pushing the ncaa to the back burner like they currently do with fcs. Playing most of it online with the championship and or semis on espn2 or such. All the while selling the real product the p4 tourney.
