Next year will be the beginning of knowing that JSU will have a game every Thanksgiving weekend. We all know (whether you like it or not) that the Bama-Auburn game owns that day in the state.
How would you guys feel about playing every Black Friday, either home or away? To guarantee that, you would need to play an in-state school. To do that you would have to have a non-conference game. Examples of that non-conference rivalry weekend are South Carolina vs Clemson, Kentucky vs Louisville, even GA Tech vs Georgia.
So why not try to set up every Black Friday that JSU would play Troy? What would prompt Troy to say yes? Money, without students on campus on Thanksgiving weekend, what better way to sell tickets than having a bunch of JSU fans coming in? If Troy says "no" then try UAB. My guess is that UAB won't be interested. But I would think that South Alabama would be interested.
Thoughts....

I hate non-Saturday games, but the realist in me knows that Iron Bowl Saturday is NOT the day to schedule anything in this state.
I'd be cool with Black Friday. Thanksgiving is technically over by then, and most folks nowadays will do anything to avoid going near a shopping center that day. A big rivalry game might just be the excuse they need.
The only hitch in the plan is high school semifinals, which would be going on at the same time. It may only involve 28 teams statewide, but it's a big recruiting day for most college staffs in the state. Problem is, it's better than doing it a day later, and I don't know when else you'd fit it in.

Not a fan of non-Saturday games but the day after Thanksgiving is different. It would put us in the spotlight as not that many games are on that day.
Playing troy state would be fun, but I think even a conference rival would be up for it if it got us on a major sports network.

A Black Friday Night Battle for the Ol School Bell would be cool. It would 100% have to be a night game though.
I know people say "troy has moved past the JSU rivalry" but currently on Rivalry week they play a rotating schedule. So outside of the Sunbelt inner-conference rivalries they don't really have a "rival" and truthfully, neither do we.
It seems like the smart play if Troy is game.

A couple questions: Why does it have to be a night game? I'm thinking 3:00 ish. It would be late November and JSU fans don't like cool weather. Plus the away team's fans would get home at a good time. Would you like it, if it was against South Alabama?

The Sun Belt schedule may preclude an OOC game at the end of the year as that would mean another Sun Belt school would have to play OOC as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I love the Black Friday idea kudo to Stevo. But if troy st says no that leaves UAB. Which I honestly believe would be an even bigger game and I’d prefer it. I’m beyond the troy st game/rivalry.
But I’m not sure why it need be an instate rivalry. If fbs comes about for them I’d like a rivalry with UTC, KSU, or TUNA in that order. I really like the idea of it being regional/local.

The beauty of a 3-3:30 pm kickoff in November is that the game starts while the sun is out (providing some degree of warmth) but it's dark (or close to it) by the 4th quarter, which really heightens the atmosphere in a close game.
And people driving in from out of town still have time to hit local restaurants after the game, whether they're driving back home that night or staying in a hotel.
And nothing beats a mid-day/all day tailgate.

South Alabama, Troy and UAB all have the same issue on playing the day of the Iron Bowl. Last season UAB moved their game to Black Friday. If it is an instate school then both JSU and that school have the same issues and gain equally. So each year the bands and fans can go to the Away game. I like the 3:00 time, because even if you were going to Mobile, you could leave Jacksonville around 8:00 AM and be home by around midnight. (2:00 PM kickoff might be better.)
Took a look at last years schedules and South Alabama played Coastal on Black Friday. So UAB and USA are both not wanting to play against the Iron Bowl.
How about if this was set up with MTSU? Only about 3.5 hours to MTSU from Jacksonville. That Saturday Tennessee plays Vandy. Not a real incentive for MTSU to play on Friday at home.
Last couple of seasons the Sun Belt all played conference games the last week.

Thought I would check out the AAC's schedule. Next year they will be at 14 football schools. This year with 11, Navy is OFF Thanksgiving weekend. Looked back a few years and didn't see any other year they did that. (Remember they play Army in early December). IF, if, IF they want to continue to do that then that would make one of the other 13 AAC schools not have a conference game. Therefore UAB might be available.

The reasoning for the night game is it's black Friday. A 5PM kick gives people time to do their shopping and all that hooplah in the morning and make it to the game.
If you're worried about it being cold, bring a jacket.
Also it's a Friday so being out late isn't as bad because there's no work and no church on Saturday morning.

The thin line is to sell a chunk of tickets to the visitors. The further the drive, the earlier the game. Such as: UAB/JSU kickoff at 5:00 Troy/JSU kickoff at 4:00 South Alabama/JSU kickoff at 2:30

As more time passes Im falling into the no need to play troy state. See our programing with more opportunity to move past that point in the JSU life. Our main focus games need to be schools we desire to be our peers. troy state has had a decent run but the with more teams moving to FBS Pike County is easy to avoid by recruits and others which will make it tougher to remain as the same level. USM joining the SBC will also give USA two games which should raise their awareness in South Alabama which could push them past troy state in South Alabama recruits minds.

I mean fair, the natural choice that comes to mind is to try to grow something with UAB, but as others have said, they don't seem interested.
