ETSU finished 2021-2022 with a 15-17 record and #186 KenPom ranking. This is another one that falls in the "helpful for separation" category. It won't help us rise much above where we are, but as long as we win, it will keep our heads above water.
That said, ETSU is a traditional powerhouse in hoops. They finished the 2019-2020 season with 30 wins and a SoCon championship. (No Dance due to the Rona.) Coach Steve Forbes has since moved on to Wake, but this should still be a solid game to show where we are as a program.

Last year's rankings have nothing to do with this year. Any idea when the new KenPom rankings come out?

Last year's rankings have nothing to do with this year. Previous year's rankings have EVERYTHING to do with forecasting the strength of this year's schedule in mid-July. If a team goes 10-22 in 2021 with a #280-plus KenPom ranking, the chances of them magically becoming a high-end Tournament team in 2022 are pretty low. It can happen, but it's the definition of a "Cinderella story". Absolutely not the norm. ETSU was kind of mediocre last year -- considering that program's history, they were flat-out bad -- but even with the coaching change, we know we can't totally overlook them. They won 30 three seasons ago. If any team has some Cinderella in 'em, it'd be the Bucs. Any idea when the new KenPom rankings come out? Not until after the preseason AP poll is released in late October.

Arkansas, South Alabama & YES JAX STATE will have reworked rosters. While I agree it's all we have to go on but check the movement in KenPom from week one to after Maui Classic. Auburn is a fine example last year. TWO best players were from the portal, if memory serves me correct. While the portal creates kaos and confusion, it also gives schools like us a chance to compete on a higher level. Trouble being the major press will not recognize the Mid Major as quick as a lower level Power 5 team. But it also creates a somewhat boom or bust situation. From a fan's standpoint, I kinda like it.

Dana O'Neil @danaoneilwriter · 14h Here's a thought: instead of trying to muck up the NCAA Tourney, how's about all the conference commissioners agree to make the start of the college hoops season better? Like agree to play real games. Hard games. Against schools we've heard of

Most everybody wants glorified practices to get things tuned in. No one want to jump right out there against duke or Kansas etc.. Duke doesn't want to jump right on Kansas either. I wouldn't look for the beginning of the season to change.

I wouldn't look for the beginning of the season to change. Exactly. And I would add that there's a HUGE difference between playing a D-II or NAIA team in the first week of the season vs. playing teams like that throughout the entire pre-conference schedule. Use the first week or two to get in the flow, work the bugs out, whatever... then schedule strong the rest of the way. For a mid-major like Jax State, this is the only time of year when we can really move up in the rankings. Playing Sisters of the Poor won't get it done. We have to play upper tier teams (and hopefully win some of those) or we'll enter the conference schedule ranked in the 150s or lower, and all we'll do then is act as a drain on everyone else's SoS, even if we win out in conference play. And why does this matter? Two reasons: 1) A team ranked in the 50s or higher is more likely to earn an at-large bid to the Dance, if the conference tourney doesn't go our way, and... 2) An NCAA tourney game as a 12th seed is FAR more winnable than a game as a 16th seed.
