Even with Davidson being a non-scholly team, the way this game plays out should tell us a lot.
Under the previous regime, I would've envisioned this: JSU gets the ball, scores quickly. Davidson gets the ball... and holds the ball... and holds the ball some more... End of Q1. Rinse and repeat for 3 more quarters. Final score would be something like JSU 35, Davidson 14. Time of possession would be more like 40 minutes for Davidson, 20 minutes for JSU.
Instead, we'll get to see how good Zac Alley's defense really is. The Gamecocks certainly seem to be more disciplined than in recent years, but any lingering issues will be exposed by the T.O.
If we play disciplined assignment ball, then Davidson doesn't get to play keep-away for the entire game. And once we have a comfortable lead, our running game should allow us to play a little keep-away of our own.
I'm going with this, final answer:
Final score: JSU 48, Davidson 3. Time of possession: close to 30 min. each.

It's Davidson. We win by 5 or 6 touchdowns.

It is easy to look at the 48-21 loss to KSU last season and think it was competitive for a while, but it was 41-7 at halftime and KSU called off the dogs. KSU has always played disciplined and completely dominated Davidson. Our last game against them was kind of a microcosm of the chuck and duck offense of old when it was successful. The final score didn’t tell the whole story. It was a tougher game than it should have been given the huge talent gap. We beat them 49-14 but had only 18 minutes possession. 2 turnovers and 75 yards in penalties didn’t help our cause. With the difference in talent we could blow them out playing backyard football… and that’s basically what happened.

Let's see how HCRR has them ready to defend the TO. This will be good live fire for the upcoming KSU game. That is what I was thinking.... I am growing to loathe KSU.... I already loathe ksu. And have for awhile.

The only thing that worries me a little with Davidson is that we had trouble sealing the end at times against SFA. That said, we aren’t having to guard against Gipson burning us deep and we can play man free. Hat on hat I like our chances at stopping the dives and counters that come with the triple option. They may break 200 on the ground in a cloud of dust, but I don’t see a lot of chunk plays in their future.

From what I remember when we played them last time, they are very well coached and play hard. Unfortunately (or fortunately for us) they will be physically overmached. We can't make a bunch of mental mistakes. If we play smart and disciplined, they will have a hard time hanging with us. They are a great PFL team. I like that we will get to see some option before KSU. I'm sure scheduling them was done with that in mind.

Has anyone else heard the old press box side will be open to ticket holders? All I've heard is that athletics and the band office are working together on a plan for the kids and parents in town for Band Day. No word on whether that means any part of the north stands will be open.

Davidson won't be able to stop the O. I think JSU wins big. 100%. After SFA, I think we will be much more aggressive on the D Line as well. Should be able to get some 3 and outs which will wear their D out quickly. That's the kryptonite to the option. They aren't a bad team though, and I expect them to get after it early so we can't sleepwalk. No inside info, but listening to HCRR, Luttrell may get held out to heal up from Montgomery.
