JSU renews their rivalry with the Racers of Murray State this Saturday at 6PM at Roy Stuart Stadium in Murray, Kentucky.
The Gamecocks are 12-1 against Murray State since 2008, with an average score of 38-22.
The last meeting between the two programs was during the spring season of 2021, with the Gamecocks posting a win over the then #16 Ranked Racers, 28-14 in Murray.
The Racers lost their first game of the 2022 season, 63-10 to the FBS Texas Tech Red Raiders.
The Red Raiders rushed for 133 yards against Murray, while the pass-happy TTU offense completed 27 of 37 throws with one interception and 472 yards.
Murray entered the 2022 season ranked 39th in the FCS, and picked second in the OVC. They returned their QB (Sophomore DJ Williams) who passed for over 1,000 yards in 2021, 900+ yard rusher Damonta Witherspoon, and receiver LaMartez Brooks (447 yards). Unfortunately for the Racers, they are having to replace their defensive front - though their back-end is experienced.
The 2021 Racers allowed over 25 ppg, while scoring over 21, with their run defense coming in with a suspect ranking of 76th nationally.
It is impossible to read much into the TTU game. The Racers go vertical more than most teams, and possess depth and talent at the receiver position Murray was unable to match.
Dean Hood is an excellent FCS coach and will have scouted and game-planned well for JSU. While the Gamecocks will hold an advantage in terms of talent and depth, Murray retains enough talent from their 6-5 2021 team to make the game uncomfortable at times.
While Jax State was a 9.5-point favorite in 2021, there doesn't appear to be a currently bettable line on the 2022 game at the time of this writing.
The Big_Fan prediction: JSU 38 Murray State 22.
