OK, I'm going to try to summarize this as best I can, but there are a few questions remaining. If anyone has those answers and wants to provide them, I won't be offended. In the meantime, just understand it's impossible to figure out most of the finer details without the exact numbers and percentages. This is intended solely as a very rough ballpark.
We should all be watching FAU's run (Sweet 16 so far) with at least some amount of happiness. Not saying you have to *root* for them, but it's a good thing for us when they win. Here's why:
Revenue from the NCAA Tourney is distributed based on "units" per game played in. This year's units will be about $375K-$400K per game, meaning a team advancing to the Sweet 16 provides its conference with an additional $1.125M to $1.2M per year for six years. (Or $6.75M to $7.2M total.) This money is then distributed to the member schools however each conference sees fit. (One of the unanswered questions: How does CUSA split it up?)
This is where it gets interesting for Jax State.
FAU is leaving CUSA, so they will forfeit their share of the funds. Jax State will be moving in, meaning we will (at least nominally) get a cut of a pie split 9 ways in 2023 and 10 ways from 2024 on.
I say "nominally" above because we likely won't actually get a check from CUSA. Depending how Jax State negotiated its contract with CUSA (another unanswered question), we probably agreed to have at least a portion of these NCAA funds go towards our entrance fees. Whether this is a set amount each year, a percentage, or the whole amount, I don't know. Regardless, the further FAU advances, the better.
They'll either generate us some additional funds above and beyond what we were expecting, or they'll pay off our tab a little more quickly. Frankly, I'll take either option.
So far, FAU's tourney run has generated *as much as* $733K for Jax State over six years. (Probably less than that, but again, I don't have those figures.)
For every game they win, we'll see *as much as* $40K more each year ($240K after 6 years).
Units are capped at the Final Four, meaning the most we'd see from this would be about $1.2 million total ($2M x 6 years divided by 10 teams). This would nearly cover Jax State's CUSA entrance fee of $1.5 million.
Hopefully, Ray will right the ship and we'll be able to make our own tourney run soon. But -- at least through the Final Four -- keep an eye on FAU. One way or another, they're making us money.
