Official or not, no player has worn Abbott's #18 since *AT LEAST* the 2006-07 season. (That's as far back as I can confirm.)

But was Case number retired ? If Case number was retired and not Rudy’s that will be something unforgivable for a lot of people.

I don't know whether Abbott's #18 was "officially" retired -- meaning I can't confirm it, not that it hasn't been retired -- but no player has worn that number in at least 15 years, so I'm guessing it's retired as well. But for those lot of people who might think it's unforgivable: if a player takes the field wearing #18, you have a legitimate complaint. Otherwise, you're just being pissed off for the sake of being pissed off.

If not it should be retired, offically. Sounds like it is but correct a wrong if one exist.
For the record I have no idea if it is retired.

I really know the answer to Abbott number not being retired , I remember Rudy told me Case called and told him he wanted to retire it . He was going to try and get his former players back for the retirement. Someone I don’t know who veto that idea . If you ever wonder why I sound so bitter and post negative this is the reason why . It’s also has 1000% reason why I will not donate a single penny to the current leaders of JSU because of this here . I was stun when Rudy told me this . I am not mad at Case , he isn’t the cause of this. He does deserve the recognition he has gotten . I know there is a few people that aren’t happy as well . This type thing will hurt fund raising efforts. It’s a shame to but I really not shock . It’s also why I don’t return phone calls from the alumni office when they call . I tell you this Greg better get handle on this because with the move up he won’t look as impressive.

I know people who tried to call about the job that played at jsu and Greg did not even return the call. The man who we talking about is no longer here to enjoy the day with his players . So yeah it’s unforgivable from this group of “leaders”. As I said people will soon see the kind of leadership we have with the move up and see how many people they have really ticked off . So calling them won’t help. When they don’t meet the marks on fund raising etc people like you will start demanding a change . I will just sit back and wait.

As I said in a different post, I am ok on the my entertainment value. I do think that Coach Abbott era was extremely successful and he should have all the accolades he can get. I am not sure of why there was an oversight, but it does need to be rectified.

I am not calling you a liar, but if you know who vetoed it then discuss it with them or call them out. I am not sure if it’s a one look and done, or if you get multiple looks before the committee. If a man that was as successful as he was should have a jersey retired. I’m 99% sure that nobody with that kind of veto power 15+ years ago still has that kind of power now.

Aren't jerseys normally retired by coaches, not Trustees and A.D.'s? If this is the case, then #18 is de facto retired, since Case never gave it to anyone else. So here's where I stand: If Abbott's #18 jersey is displayed somewhere in the stadium alongside Case's #26 jersey (e.g., along the outfield fence or in the field house), then we can all relax and enjoy a nice game of baseball. If Case's jersey is not displayed anywhere in the stadium, and the team continues not to assign #18 to active players, we can also all relax and enjoy the game. HOWEVER: If Jim Case's jersey is proudly displayed somewhere in the stadium and there's no corresponding Abbott jersey, then I'm 100% with redcocks on this one. This needs to be rectified YESTERDAY.

This something I have known for a while. When I saw they ha d retired Case I viewed it as a major slap into the face of Rudy . You can bet if I knew who did it , I would have plenty to say to that person or persons . It would be a one sided conversation . I again have no problem with Case number being retired or anything else he’s been recognized for.

In the past it seems JSU officials read this board. If this is an issue someone needs to man up and get it fixed if needed.

In MLB the ownership/front office decides whose numbers to retire. In college, that would correspond to the president or AD. Of course, the coach can simply not assign a number. But the new coach never met Abbott and in a few years nobody will be left who knows who he was and they might order an 18 jersey if someone wanted it.
