Lead guitarist for one of the greatest bands ever. So good that they needed no catchy name, they were simply The Band. Robbie was a guitar prodigy starting with the guys at the tender age of 16. Touring the world as they backed up Ronnie Hawkins and later Bob Dylan. Here's a clip from the greatest concert film ever, The Last Waltz. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ki3zzZ-GsGI

I actually discovered Robbie Robertson before I discovered The Band, thanks to his 1987 solo album.
When I finally discovered The Band (very shortly thereafter) I was blown away. "This... this is good."
"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" ... "The Weight" ... "Cripple Creek" ... "Ophelia" ... "Makes No Difference" ... I mean, c'mon, man. He was one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

I never got to see Robertson, but did see The Band at The Ryman. The greatest concert/show I've ever attended. In the house were The Black Crows, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Vince Gill & Amy Grant and many many more. Emmy Lou Harris came out and sang one song. She was lingering around the stage and Levon Helm asked her, "You need something else Emmy Lou?" She answered, "Mr. Helm, do you mind if I hang around and sing backup?" That the respect the greatest in music had for The Band. You're right brother... one of the greatest bands ever. So big Elton John acknowledged them in a song.

I hated that he and Levon had the falling out. Anyway as they could say now, "It Makes No Difference".

Never became close again but I think I read where Robertson attended a couple of Levon's Saturday night Rumbles = as he liked to call them. MY BAD ... it was Levon Helm that I saw, although they were as close to The Band as one could get after the split. This was after Levon's bout with throat cancer. His Dirt Farmer album is outstanding. Especially "Tennessee Judd."
