UTEP at FIU (Wed) Sam Houston at NMSU LaTech at MTSU Other than the obvious game we're playing tonight, these three will all go a long way toward showing what the 2nd half of the season will be like for us. On paper, none are classic mismatches... if you'd asked me during the preseason who'd win, I probably would've guessed wrong. If UTEP, Sam, and Middle all pull out wins (especially easy wins) then it bodes very well for us. If they all get trounced, it could signal that our 6th win could be hard to come by.

I think all three of those games are winnable for our past opponents... UTEP being at FIU makes it a bit tougher. La Tech and FIU are both a bit Jekyll and Hyde. NMSU lost to UMass and beat New Mexico - who beat UMass. J&H. Most of the CUSA teams are Jekyll and Hyde.

I would've preferred for Sammy to be a bit more competitive against NMSU. That season-ending game against the Aggies on rivalry weekend is starting to look pretty big.

(Granted, FIU has a lot more than football history going against it.) If they can hold onto their coaches, neither will be an easy out in years to come.

The NMSU coach is 62 and has had health problems. I don’t see a big time program giving him a call.
The FIU guy is 58. He had one really good year at San Jose State and cashed in at Colorado where he was pretty mediocre. A good year or two might get him some interest but I don’t see a bunch of P5 beating his door down. Hopefully we can lessen his job advancement chances next week.

Jerry Kill being 62 with health problems is precisely why holding onto him as coach is no guarantee. He doesn't have to get hired away for the Aggies to lose him. (And no, folks, I'm not saying he'd die. Just retire. Let's not be overly grim.) Mike MacIntyre could be a guy who got lucky at one place, cashed in big at another place, and is now in a situation where his luck is going to run out. Or he could be one of those (many, many) coaches who has a ceiling. How high that ceiling is, of course, is the question. But if he won in the MWC, he could win in CUSA. That's really all FIU cares about: get us out of the freaking cellar. We're tired of having everyone's shoeprints on our face.
