I think I noticed the band traveled to the MTSU game - from watching on tv.
Does anyone know if they are also traveling to the FIU game in Miami?

No. And unless a wealthy donor steps forward to fund away trips for the band, FIU will probably never happen.
It would've cost $200K to bus the band 300 miles to Columbia for the South Carolina game, which is why that one's not happening. My guess is, the 763-mile trip to FIU would probably be double that, at least.
Southerners will also likely never travel to UTEP, NMSU, Sam Houston, La Tech, or Liberty.
WKU is an outside possibility, but not probable. We made that trip in 2003, but that was the playoffs.
The only sure travel games in CUSA for Southerners will be MTSU and Kennesaw. (And when we qualify, the CUSA championship game and most regional bowl games.)

Thank you!
That's a bummer - I will still try and make it to the FIU game. It's around a 2-hour drive away for me.
It is not a complete make or break factor, but having the Southerners there always makes for a much better experience!

The Southerners Alumni Base has show in recent years that they are willing and able to give what cumulatively amounts to large sums IF asked and IF the project resonates. IF the alumni had been given a number to raise in order to have sent the Southerners to the upcoming South Carolina game, the band would be going.

I wonder is the school was choosing not to spend on the SC trip in hopes of using it to travel to a bowl game?

I wonder is the school was choosing not to spend on the SC trip in hopes of using it to travel to a bowl game? Possible, but Jax State's ability to magically find money to take the band to postseason games has always impressed me. It's probably safe to say the Southerners will be attending any bowl game we're lucky enough to land, unless we somehow get sent across the country. (Unlikely for reasons I went into in another post.)

Unrelated, and I know it's probably money 😂😂 but why doesn't the band have our logo on the instruments like the drums?

Unrelated, and I know it's probably money 😂😂 but why doesn't the band have our logo on the instruments like the drums? There are a number of reasons. (1) With the exception of instruments like 20J's and a few others, horns are owned by the members, not the university. (2) The Marching Southerners are part of the Dr. David L. Walters Department of Music at JSU, and does NOT fall under the auspices of the athletics department as many schools do. The "Southerners" exists to promote the department of music, not athletics. Yes, they are supportive of the AD, but the AD doesn't control them. If they were going to have logos on the instruments, they would be the Southerners' logo. Last I heard, The Marching Southerners disburses around $700,000 worth of scholarship money annually (factoring in scholarships). While that seems like a lot, consider that with over 550 members, almost 6% of the student body at JSU is in the band (and MANY more have some kind of connection). That is nuts for a major university. I don't know how it is now, but in the old days 80% of the band members were music majors. I imagine it is a lot lower now, but the Department of music is huge business for the University, and probably brings in significantly more revenue than all of the athletics departments combined. Some of my information could be out of date, but that is the traditional answer.

If you're talking about the drum heads, it's because they go through multiple during the season. It's just not cost effective to have logos.
