As much as I felt good about this season early, I don’t feel great about our chances this week. The reason is that our biggest defensive weakness is against a ball controlled passing game, and that is Spencer Rattler’s strength. We can shut down their running game for the most part, but the key to the game for us will be getting pressure in the QB’s face early and often. If we can do that against an SEC offensive line, we can win this game. I don’t know that we can, and I’m afraid our offense will have difficulty sustaining possessions allowing them more opportunities to score. If that happens, it could get out of hand and end up embarrassing.
I’m hoping for the best but expecting an outcome similar to their game against Furman.

Fair assessment. I would agree.

I’ll believe for us. JSU will definitely cover the spread. Feel very very good about this one.

Remember that is a new coach!

I don’t think we’ll win but it’s not as hopeless as I once thought. South Carolina isn’t very good and may have thrown in the towel on the season. We are only a 15.5 point underdog and ESPN gives us a 20% chance of winning. (Rutgers is 8.7% at Ohio State and they are 6-2).

We'll need extra doses of "hard edge" on defense for the entire game. As for the O, we'll need flawless execution on the up-tempo plan to keep us in this one. Any mistakes or bobbles along the way and it could get ugly.

We need our best QB THROWING performance of the season to even have a chance.
They will have a game plan for our run option offence, we need to show some arm strength in this game. I don't mean 3 yard dink-'n-dunks either.... I mean 10-20 yd. passes in-stride to open receivers.
Field position will be key to our defensive success so our Punter needs to show up in this game too... he's been too inconsistent this season.

And we've lost Jabari Mack at corner for the rest of the season due to injury. (He had surgery the other day.) Losing depth in the defensive secondary is not what we needed this week.

Okay, now I'm nauseous... 1. We still have a chance. I mean, sure, the Lessers are an SEC team with an NFL-bound QB and 3rd teamers at some positions who could start for us... but they ARE having a crappy season, and we're... not. 2. Even if we do lose -- even if we lose BADLY -- it's not exactly unexpected. After all, the Lessers are an SEC team with and NFL-bound QB and 3rd teamers at some positions who could start for us. 3. But we do have a chance. I think the Lessers might jump to an early, convincing lead. Then their train will go off the rails. Meanwhile, the true Gamecocks will continue to plug away and chip away at that lead. By the time we catch up to them in the second half, the Lessers will be so mentally scourged they won't be able to do anything right. Jax State wins, SEC Roll Call and SEC Shorts both have a field day mocking Beamer, Pat McAfee declares Rich Rodriguez the Messiah, everyone with a Power 5 opening calls Rich Rod offering millions upon millions for him to be their new coach, and he replies, plainly and publicly, "I'm not leaving Jax State. I'll stay here til I retire. This is home." 4. And then I wake up. But man, what a ride...

This is what they mean by FBS depth. Next man up. Injuries are part of the game, and you have to be able to survive a long season.

I watched the South Carolina game against Texas A&M last week. A couple of things stood out - as stated earlier, Rattler will be very hard to sack. He is a gunslinger who runs around and makes plays. They also have a true freshman receiver who is gigantic - I could see him giving us (or anyone really) problems.

And we've lost Jabari Mack at corner for the rest of the season due to injury. (He had surgery the other day.) Losing depth in the defensive secondary is not what we needed this week. This is what they mean by FBS depth. Next man up. Injuries are part of the game, and you have to be able to survive a long season. And it's the key difference between low-tier SEC teams (like USC) vs average G5 programs. A team like Bama or UGA will have 4- and 5-star players riding the bench waiting for their chance to play. A team like Mississippi State or South Carolina will still have the occasional 5-star starter, but their bench is filled with 3-star guys, all up and down the two-deep. Jax State is building up to a G5-level roster. We've got an awful lot of 3-star guys on the roster (and even some 4- and 5-star transfers) but much of our bench is made up of sub-3-star players. Now, some of these guys have all the talent in the world, and just went under the radar. And some positions (notably RB) are much deeper than others. But at the end of the day, at some point there's a talent drop-off when we go to the bench. Injuries magnify that. And while we can overcome it against many programs, for others, doing so will require a strong dose of good luck. The Lessers are firmly in that latter group.
