Well they had to contradict the logic they used to defend putting Bama over Fla St. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk How? They favored an undefeated conference champion, Liberty over SMU. They didn't use that same thought process with FSU.

We can argue all day about the relative strength of the AAC and CUSA.
But what can't be argued is the strength of schedule for SMU vs Liberty:
SMU's record stands at 11-2, with their only two losses coming against P5s Oklahoma and TCU. Liberty may have gone 13-0, but they have no such impressive losses.
It must be noted, however, that one of SMU's wins was a non-FBS win over perennial football powerhouse Prairie View A&M, which currently boasts a Sagarin ranking of #241. Again, Liberty fails to have any such impressive non-FBS wins.
So the Mustangs are clearly winning this battle.
But let's compare apples to apples here:
The average ranking of ALL teams on the complete schedule, including CCG games, gives Liberty a slight lead, with a ranking of 98.23 vs SMU's 98.69. (Lower is better.)
Taking off Prairie View and ranking only FBS teams, SMU regains the lead, 86.83 to 98.23. (Of course, this also drops SMU's win total from 11 to 10 compared to Liberty's 13.)
However, as I said earlier, losing to P5 teams does not prove you are a better team. It only proves you are bad at beating P5 teams. Let's compare wins:
The average opponent ranking in SMU's winning games was 110.1 (including PVAM) and 97.0 (FBS only). (That's a huge difference.)
The average opponent ranking in Liberty's winning games was 98.23.
So if we look ONLY at wins against FBS teams, SMU does come out on top with a 97.0 to 98.23 advantage. But this is only a 1.23 point difference, based on an entirely subjective ranking system. In other words, the schedule strength is effectively identical.
Since the two teams didn't face each other head-to-head, you have to look at total FBS wins. Liberty won 13. SMU won 10 (FBS only). Advantage Flames.
Besides, SMU is moving to the ACC next season. That's a strike against them right off the bat.

What if you take Libertys best ranked 10 teams against SMUs 10 wins or do 9 for FBS?
