I just saw John Grass in the offensive huddle with Dabo before Clemson scored the winning TD against Kentucky in the Gator Bowl. Made me ponder briefly what our record would've been this year with him still at the controls. I do wish him & his family the best.

A nice guy and a good OC, but I don’t think he’d fair well as an FBS coach. My guess would be 4-8.

It’s a good question to ponder
Grass is a good coach.
He’s an even better man.
I am confident that he is an excellent husband and father.
I do hope the best for him and his.
With that said… I am happy about having HCRR.
I believe 9 wins would have been a pipe dream without HCRR.

We definitely drop the game against WKU. Probably UTEP. And I don't have a good feeling about MTSU and Sammy.
So that puts us at 4-8.
But here's the silly thing... I think we beat South Carolina with Grass at the helm.
It's not that he would've been a better coach than HCRR. Of course not. But that's the sort of game that CJG would've had circled in red on the calendar back in our FCS days. Our chance to shine against SEC competition. He would've thrown pumpkins or brought ice cream to practice or whatever it took to get those boys primed and loaded for bear.
For HCRR, it was just another game. A game he wanted to win, of course. But just another game.
So I think we would've either finished 4-8 or (if we pulled it out against the Lessers) 5-7.

The worst thing we can reasonably say about John Grass is that he lost too many football games...and he didn't lose a lot. He's a fantastic human being and I hope he's finding fulfillment in Clemson.
I think those close games and comebacks turn into losses, so I'm guessing 4 wins.

He is a great person and a great OC. I think he did the best he could here. I wouldn't mind him being the OC here again one day. I just don't think he has the skill set to be great FBS Head Coach, and that's ok. In all honesty, no one on this board has that skill set either. I wish him the best.

He’s a good HS coach, glad he’s Clemson’s problem not ours.

Just look at KC Keeler.
I don't think Grass even gets 4 wins.

I saw an interview with Keeler saying he originally decided to leave Sammy when the school announced moving up to FBS. He said he knew it would likely be a multi year slog with lots of L's along the way, & he wasn't sure he wanted to subject himself & his family to that, but his wife talked him into it. I wonder if he now regrets taking her advice.

Less at seasons end than the first part.
Sams schedule was tough for a second year FBS school. And first with a full on FBS schedule.

Less at seasons end than the first part. Sams schedule was tough for a second year FBS school. And first with a full on FBS schedule. They missed out on some of the fun we got to experience as a first-year program, but in the long run, Sammy will be fine. They really turned it up at the end of the year, and have a lot of weapons returning. They'll be the Bearkats we know and hate next season. I'm pretty sure. Kennesaw has a much, much tougher road ahead of them. They could end up in the basement, looking up with envy at FIU... I think Delaware could be a pretty good team from the start when they join in 2025. We'll see how 2024 treats them.
