We shouldn’t be begging them for games.
Who said JSU was begging?
With Army quite possibly cancelling a 4 game series with Troy, what better time than now to have a conversation to see if something can get worked out.
Oh, they’ll schedule a series, but only if they get a P2 team first and we go to their place first, and then maybe come back in four or five years blah blah blah. They don’t want to play us. We either need to schedule a home and home or forget they exist.

Not sure it will be a big deal at all. Sure there is a group of old men who care about it, but anyone under 40 would hardly give it a thought. Unless there is some good marketing done to emphasize the significance of the game. It would still be a big deal. Even if you forget the past, a home and home with an in-state FBS school is like an instant rivalry. And they have a good team. Easy travel for football and band folks (who keep the old ways more than your average JSU fan). Plus, I am 38, so I'm just a little too young to remember the rivalry when it was competitive, but even I know we Whup Troy. The only downside would be to schedule it before we are actually competitive and get dragged, but I think we are close even now and by the time both schools schedules would permit, that wouldn't be an excuse. I think it would be good for both. Do really believe our team this year would have gotten dragged by troy state? troy state only beat ULL by 7 and didnt give up 3TDs by TOs. I would have been happy to have played them this year.

We could beat Army and Navy. Air Force would be more of a challenge. Think we beat all 3 but you do know Army handled Air Force easily. Air Force was not a real good run defensive team. My opinion Army was the best of the three this year. Navy would have benn in last in my poll.

Their next opening is in 2026. But they only have one OOC home game and it isn’t an FCS team. In 2027 they have one home and one road and no FCS.
The next year they could schedule us at home and also add an FCS is 2034. They host Army in 2031 and 2032.

Would love to see a 3 game series with the first in Bham made into a big event, a Kickoff special. Let the city of Bham pay both some money and take the preseason hype away from UAB. Then do a H v H with whoever as the first host. If tory state I would have a huge penalty if our home game is cancelled. With them demanding to host the first, might be plans to cancel or forever delay the return trip. tory state will have a hard time selling out their stadium unless JSU fills it but on the flipside we would have more than capacity.
At JSU you could make everyone exit at halftime sell another sellout for halftime then let the football ticket holders back in the stadium for the second half.

The last game in 2001 was in troy. The next next is due to be in Jacksonville. That's how it works. I'd be ok with a Birmingham week zero kick-off however.

It sounds like you don't know how this works. If you are a G5 and have a shot of a P4 team at home, I would want to get that nailed down first, as it is a priority over another G5. If they require JSU to go to their place first it means we go there 2nd. (It is a home and home). That's to balance out their non-conference schedule. You want 2 home and 2 away.
As an example, Troy may have to fill the Army opening in 2031 and 2034. At Troy in 2031 and at JSU in 2034. Nothing wrong with that.
ADD ON: If JSU had a shot at either Syracuse or Wake Forest at home in 2026, I would get that worked out before working out Troy.

I understand how it works perfectly. We scheduled Georgia Southern, Southern Miss, and Coastal right off the bat. You’re telling me we can’t announce a series with Troy sometime between now and 2034?

If both schools want too. JSU is the new kid on the block, Troy has more scheduling "clout". Since Army has a scheduling problem to solve there is incentive.

The Southerners have certainly done their share to keep "Whup Troy" alive over the years, so it's not entirely forgotten. And there's at least one store in Pike County selling "Whup Jax State" merch, so the rivalry is only mostly dead, even down there. And as Miracle Max once said, "There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive."
That said, while it may be slightly alive, it's definitely in ICU.
While we were languishing in FCS, troy state's fans moved on first to UAB, then USA (or "South" as they prefer to call them), so I figured once we made it up to FBS, the "Ol School Bell" rivalry's defibrillator would come from Jax State's end of things.
And then Chandler Burks fumbled...
And now, if you ask any current Jax State student or alumni under 35 who their most hated team is, they'll answer with a nocturnal creature of the avian variety located just northwest of Atlanta.
Whenever we get the schedules to align and we're able to start playing troy state again -- especially if it's a competitive game, and doubly so if the Gamecocks win -- the rivalry will be kickstarted for sure. But I don't think it's ever going to be as heated as it was in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and very early 90s. By 1994, it was already beginning to wane. The rivalry in the late 90s and early 2000s was only a shadow of its former self.
JSU's No. 1 rival is Kennesaw now. And troy state's No. 1 is South. The rivalry with UAB is shared by both of us, but they're not No. 1 for either of us.
I don't think this will change. We'll have been playing KSU as a conference opponent for nearly a decade by the time we face troy state again. We'll probably have a nice secondary rivalry going with MTSU as well by then, and unless KSU turns it around, the Band of Blue will probably be the Southerners' biggest "band" rival. I don't think the current version of troy state's SOTS is up to the challenge of dethroning our friends to the north. SOTS is still a big band (~350 members) but their power is nowhere near what it used to be under Dr. Long. A lot could happen in 7-8 years, though, so I guess we'll see.
Point is... if we NEEDED a rival, troy state would step right back in as our No. 1. But we don't, so they won't. And they don't need us, either. So while this would still be a big game -- probably a sellout -- it wouldn't be an all-consuming, on-and-off-the-field cultural rivalry like it was in the old days.

Whup Troy! We could beat them on the football field as well as dominate them at halftime. I remember the campus excitement in the old days when TROY STATE was on the schedule. You mean troy state? You left off Sucks

We won’t be playing them every year so it will be hard to develop a real rivalry. Due to the closeness, I agree Kennesaw will become our biggest rival.
Times change. Just glad we will have an actual rival unless they move to another conference.
