Anyone know why the new dorm was not built like Meeham on the pod floor plan?
I will have a freshman attending in fall of 24. All the kids want separate bedrooms. It seems like newer dorms at other colleges are being built on pod floorplan.

It seems like newer dorms at other colleges are being built on pod floorplan. Don't know for sure, but I do know the new dorm was designed and built to maximize the number of beds due to a shortage on campus. That's probably the reason a more traditional floorplan was used. (Again, this is a guess.)

I’m sure I will get blasted for this but I think we should flip the library into a dorm . We don’t need a library that darn big . We need dorm rooms . Who the heck the library now days anyway? I say give Jacksonville money to expand their library or build one for all to use . We get what we need which are dorm rooms .

I think that would be a great location for Dorms.

I actually agree partially, in that many students get info from resources other than the printed page, but consider... the library stays open very late during finals because so many students asked for it. Also, there are library staff that provide guidance on actually finding information, understanding it, etc., a value-added service that students don't get by just going to Wikipedia (God help us all). Additionally, Houston Cole serves faculty as well as students, along with the community at large, not to mention media & out of state requests for various reasons. The library has already had a significant portion of its space repurposed, with varying degrees of success, resulting in a significant number of books, periodicals & other items literally being thrown away. Various departments around campus have been given space there, at times, including Nursing (who wasn't happy about it, & neither were Library staff), along with sundry other offices & departments. You'll be happy to know that the university admin seem to be on your side as to taking over the library, but for office space, not dorm rooms.

Every one would benefit from staff experience. We all know we need dorms . Flipping the library may very well cost too much. Maybe I been watching too many house flipping shows lol .

There is a LOT more at Houston Cole Library besides books, and a whole heckuva lot going on there besides students looking up information for research papers.
So short answer, no. Houston Cole needs to remain a library.
There are other places (both currently on campus and campus-adjacent) which can be used for dorms. No need to look like absolute buffoons and get rid of our library. Though I must admit, getting rid of our library would sure take care of the student overcrowding problem... just not the way you intended.

I think it makes more sense to demolish and rebuild Wallace into a dorm. There’s plenty of land to build new without knocking something down. We need to expand our footprint True, but in this case, Wallace is slated for demolition anyway.

I think it makes more sense to demolish and rebuild Wallace into a dorm. There’s plenty of land to build new without knocking something down. We need to expand our footprint Wallace currently sits empty and condemned. Demolishing and rebuilding is our best option. And since we have a housing shortage, it makes the most sense to build a dorm.

True, but in this case, Wallace is slated for demolition anyway. When? I think they approved to do it like 2 years ago... And well... It is still there 😂😂😂 My understanding is there's been considerable back & forth regarding insurance, FEMA & such. Originally, I believe the thinking was to repair the damage, then Beehler (& BOT's?) decided to tear it down for something new. All that wasted a ton of time.
