For decades, college athletes & sports have been referred to under the rubric of amateur athletics or student athletes. Since a kid can now be paid anywhere from $600 for the privilege of EA using their likeness in a video game to millions from a company like Dr. Pepper or Nissan, do we still use the terms amateur athletics/student athletes? They really don't seem to be appropriate anymore, imo, at least for the current iteration of FBS. Maybe still applies to FCS & below? And, if the term amateur no longer applies, what does?

I haven't heard much mention of "students" at all, at least on the P5 level.
When was the last time any of us heard of a star player at the highest levels of college ball being declared academically ineligible?
I mean, an optimist would say the academic support staffs at those schools have been doing a bang-up job. At least, I suppose that's what an optimist would say. Because I'm more of a jaded cynic myself.

I'd be interested to know what AD's/HC's consider them to be, when talking amongst friends/ colleagues & when no mic's are around. I miss Mike Leach. My cynicism meter pegs a lot these days too.

What about calling them "union members"? As could be the case at Dartmouth basketball?
