Looks like JSU landed a big D-line transfer from the enemy to our south. He was a consensus 3-star coming out of high school in 2019. The trojans had him on the OL, but his Twitter makes it clear he plans to play DT at JSU. He redshirted in 2019, so he should have a full four years with the Gamecocks. Ricky Samuel DT, 6-3, 300 RS Freshman Brewton, Ala. / TR Miller HS / troy state univ. youtu.be/W8uT32sXJLUyoutu.be/WQwYqm_ux-4DISCLAIMER: I'm hoping on this board I won't need to say this, but I'm going to state it once for the record, just in case. I'm not saying this guy is going to be the greatest player to don a Gamecock uniform. I'm merely stating the fact we picked up a body from the transfer portal, and, based on his high school stats and accolades, he shows some promise to be a contributor for us. If you interpret this as "naively believing high school kids and unproven transfers are great football players" then do yourself and me a favor and never, ever speak to me. Thank you and God bless.

Part of this discussion includes recruiting rankings and high school performance (as that is all we have to go by). Nothing is a guarantee but that's what makes it fun to discuss... and past performance is a good (if imperfect) indicator of future success. He was recruited by Tennessee coming out of high school and received an offer, but for some reason didn't end up there. He was offered by Wake before signing with Troy... I don't think Wake would offer a player with poor grades.

Just want an immediate impact from him wherever he lines up.

It would be nice to recruit walk on all stars. But I'd say look for a long four year career here and hopefully solidly improving athlete year after year. If we had that in a 4 yr term we'd have a solid team every year. I don't like living and dying by the superstar.
