I heard it was going up, not down...?
Is it just going down temporarily during construction? That would make more sense, although old home side capacity was somewhere around 7K or 8K. Maybe they'll only have to block off half of it?

The only time the stadium has even been remotely full was the UTC game after the renovations. I wouldn't worry about it.

Honestly we weren't selling at 24000 anyway.
If you decrease it to 20,000 and fill it every week you develop a more consistent atmosphere. More akin to the near sellout games we had in the playoffs and with Liberty. Those games are a much better time. So you decrease the capacity, improve the atmosphere, in turn you increase the demand to go to games.
Supply and demand takes over and now we don't have to basically give away tickets to get people into the stadium.
For the sake of easy math:
24000 at $15 a ticket is $360,000 a home game in admissions.
20000 at $20 a ticket is $400,000.
But that's not accurate because it seems like the new stuff will be adding premium space which will make even more money.
So in essence, even with a decrease, if you can improve the atmosphere and make it consistent, you'll drive demand which will in turn raise prices, which make money.
Honestly I wouldn't be at all opposed to a 20,000 seat stadium if this were the case. I've been to 22,000 day games where the atmosphere was pretty similar to the 7th floor of Houston-Cole.
I'm going to sound like a fanboy, but look at what NDSU does with the Fargo Dome. The team is good, but the atmosphere in there is something that is consistently top tier.
We have certain games with great atmosphere, but truthfully they are few and far between.
Between the stadium changes and an new conference with potential local rivalries, I'd be surprised if JSU wasn't expecting this type of scenario as the end goal.
It's not about increasing accessibility to a product. It's about increasing the quality of the product. And personally, I like that move. It's needed.

We need tables with 4-6 seats. Our group would gladly pay for those. It would also keep the kids from kicking the backs of everyone's heads.

Will you be able to stand in the new and improved part of the stadium or will the security ask you to sit like a dog?

I don't disagree at all with the logic of dropping to 20K.
It's just that I'd heard we were increasing attendance with this expansion (to 29K). And if rumors of an ultimate move to FBS have any merit, 29K would be right in the pocket of where we'd need to be.
Looking back at the last pre-coof season in 2019, here's how the state's G5s did in attendance:
troy state: capacity: 30,420; avg attendance: 23,499; biggest crowd: 27,108, vs Southern Miss.
uab: capacity: 47,100 (Protective Stadium starting this fall); for Legion Field in 2019: avg attendance: 24,726; biggest crowd: 39,165, vs Bama State.
usa: capacity: 25,450; avg attendance: 16,322; biggest crowd: 20,013, vs Ga Southern.
(To clarify... 29K max would be in the pocket. The current 24K would be even better. Dropping to 20K max would seem small.)

President Killingsworth presented the stadium renovation plan to the Alumni Association in May. Plans were to reduce seating capacity but add more suites. There were no plans to move beyond FCS in Football.

You're also considering the FBS as it currently is and not as it's going to be. Every single school you just listed isn't selling out and has the same problem we currently have. I'd much rather have a packed out 20k stadium than a half empty 47k stadium. Stadium capacity is overrated AF.

When I heard we might be increasing capacity with the expansion, I was worried we were going to go to 30K-35K, and we really wouldn't need that, even with FBS the way it currently is. 29K was about the biggest I'd want to go... a minor expansion to get us close to some of the Belt schools, but not crazy huge. UAB is going to struggle mightily to fill those 47K seats, even if they keep winning. They pulled 27,932 against USA on their band day, but other than that and the Bama State game, they hovered around the 18K-23K mark. I don't see them breaking 30K on a regular basis at all.

UAB is going to have a much increased attendance. The fanbase is there but people don't go because they've been indoctrinated to think that they will be stabbed walking into the stadium.

I will have to see it to believe it. The first few games, yeah the attendance will be good but long term it will still be UAB.

UAB's attendance will definitely increase, probably by several thousand. But they absolutely will not break 30K on a regular basis. Take that anamolous Bama State game out of the equation, and I think UAB will average around 27K. Solid attendance for a G5. But it will only half-fill their stadium.

Are we losing capacity or not. Getting smaller screams giving up. Complacency.

Only JSU fans could see this type of investment and be mad about it. We will come out of this with a much more impressive facility - smaller or not. Keep in mind, we still have room to grow in the east end zone if it ever becomes necessary.
