So I was doing some more reading up on Rich Rod's background and I noticed he's had the same OC for the entirety of his time at WVU, Michigan, and Arizon: Calvin Magee. He's currently coaching running backs at Duke so I'd assume given the track record this would be a likely OC pick for Rich Rod.
As far as DC, he's had a couple. I know some on the board have floated Blackwell or Kevin Steele.
If we get either... Hooooo boy.
He did say today that some guys on the staff will be big name guys we know of and have connections and I think they both fit that bill.
The other thing I noticed is it seems like Rich Rod's offense takes a couple seasons to really get going and get rolling. For example, Michigan was bad for his first two years. But then his offense was sixth in the nation in total yards but the defense was just horrendous.
So based on my observations, don't be super shocked if the offense has some issues early. I suspect it will have an adjustment period like Shanahans offense had in Atlanta and SanFran before getting into high gear.
If our DC pick is a home run hire, we might be in for some heccin good football.
Also during my reading I found a video of him from 2015 losing his friggin mind over mental mistakes during a game at Arizona. Loved watching that. I suspect the ignored false start issue is no longer going to be ignored.

Probably not likely due to his TV gig, but if he wanted to get back into defensive coaching, I would have no issue with it. I don't know what went down during his time at UNC, but he probably saw the writing on the wall and didn't want to be a part of Fedora's staff getting canned. Something spooked him, anyway. Officially, he resigned to spend time with his family in Auburn. He is a terrible head coach... and I wouldn't want him anywhere near that position...but has a track record as quite a good defensive coach.

Magee would likely be available since Cutcliffe got fired.
How about Cutcliffe as OC if he can sign Arch Manning? 😉

One thing we have going for us is that we play essentially an FCS schedule next year.
This will give us space to figure out the offense and defense without playing an FBS team every week.
I'm pretty excited to see how we look against some of the teams we played last year.

We should crush Lamar if we play some WAC teams again.

Truth be told. I'm not expecting absolute dominance out of the gate. I think given the track record, it will take a year or two of adjustment while Rich Rod installs the offense and recruits guys that can run it.
If we bring in Blackwell or Steele, our defense should be rolling pretty early on. So I think a winning season with 8 or 9 wins is a reasonable goal. I'd like to see a reasonable effort at Tulsa. But I'm not expecting to go 10-1 or undefeated or anything.

Next few years are obviously going to be rough against CUSA teams, but we need to be punishing bad teams with more scholarships and better coaches.

Does our scholarship increase next year to the full 15 to 20 more or will it go up in steps?

I suspect it will have an adjustment period like Shanahans offense had in Atlanta and SanFran before getting into high gear. If our DC pick is a home run hire, we might be in for some heccin good football. I've been saying the exact same thing about the DC. That hire alone will determine whether Rich Rod's hiring was a good thing or a FREAKING OUTSTANDING thing. (I think Coach Rod will have a positive influence on the program itself, regardless.) As for the Michigan situation... For forever, and continuing under Rich Rod's predecessor Lloyd Carr, the Wolverines had run a traditional pro-style offense, heavy on the running game and play-action. Rich Rod came into that same locker room and installed his no huddle spread option offense. Not surprisingly, they struggled. If ever there was a situation where the new coach needed "his recruits" to run his offense, it was this one. (Well, there are other examples. Cough cough Georgia Southern cough.) Here's an article with a great breakdown of his offense (and successes and struggles) over the years: bleacherreport.com/articles/192082-the-rodriguez-spread-offense-at-full-throttleCoach Rod thought he'd have the pieces in place by 2010. As it turns out, he probably needed another season or two, but he was fired before he got there. At Arizona, he inherited a TERRIBLE team. That one took a few years because he had to get talent in place that wasn't there at all before his arrival. At JSU, though, he's inheriting an offense that's been running a version of the RPO for 8-9 years. We need to upgrade our depth for FBS, but he's not having to take a 6-5, 230 lb QB who runs a 5.0 40 and try to turn him into Pat White. He's not looking at an offensive backfield with no decent RBs. The fact he has a year as an FCS team to get the pieces in place makes it even better for him. There will be growing pains. There will be challenges. We all know this. But I think we're in a really, REALLY good spot, all things considered.
