I remember the LaPlante and Green days well and I am most certainly glad to have those behind us. However, Harper’s teams are like a box of chocolates, you just never know what team you’re going to get. We were poised to host the ASUN tourney after beating Liberty in Lynchburg, now we have totally blown that with losses to mediocre teams. I am grateful for where Harper has gotten us, but at what point do we begin holding his feet to the fire like we did Grass?

I'm not sure it's a product of Harpers coaching ability honestly. Ive said before our recruiting is abysmal. Our forwards are glorified shooting guards and our team lacks physicality. It always has. We have zero ability to consistently attack the paint and rely so heavily on the three that it's feast or famine. In January we were one of the top 3 three point squads in the nation. This month we are falling back to Earth. Hard. I don't have the same issues with Ray that I did with Grass. I think Rays doing the best with what he's got and playing to his players strengths. We play good defense but living or dying based on your shooting behind the arc isn't a recipe for consistent success IMO. I'm not sure exactly what the answer is. But I'm not ready to start pinning this all on Harper.

But I'm not ready to start pinning this all on Harper. I disagree with the "lacks physicality". I think they are quite physical. I think, "something sticks in Denmark". They aren't mentally locked in. Finch didn't start tonight and only played 21 minutes. Huffman only played 10 minutes with only 1 foul. Gibbs had two terrible "air balls", I was waiting for our band to yell "air ball" at our own player they were so bad. We only had 9 points in the first 10 minutes of the game. This is an experienced team. It isn't like they are sophomores and juniors. It's pretty well the same team as last year plus Gibbs. They should be better than last year and they aren't.

Side note: Consider Liberty was beaten toight by Jacksonville U 73 to 69.
I do think we can be physical but Huffman and Seliznak aren't as physical as the could be (should be?) when under pressure. Neither have good hands and have a tendency to bring the ball down where defenders can knock it away. I say this even though Seliznak has improved greatly since he's been here and this is the year it has shown the most.
It appears to me our guys are sometimes hesitant where before they were not. Jalen Finch drives to the basket well. We needed some of that tonight. Don't know why he didn't play more.
Tonight and the next 4 games are extra tough because it's the second time we have played these teams.
How do you miss lay-ups?

Just getting some these losses out of the way before tournament time. Trust Ray.

I’ve said it before… the difference in Grass and Harper is that Grass inherited a tradition rich program with a recent history of winning. Harper is not only building a team, he is building program culture. If you look at any of the mid-major powers, their climb was very similar to what we are going through. Not even accounting for trajectory, Harper has brought us our 3 best D1 records in 5 years. The worst possible thing we could do is turning on him. If after 10-12 years we are still fiddling around then talk about it. As it stands we are in the conference driver’s seat and could see our second trip to the dance… NIT seems like a minimum this season. We could founder, but I trust Ray.

After tonights game I'm not concerned. (Well, until the next game.) Seriously though, the Gamecocks took care of business right out of the gate. 55% shooting. Very close to 50% shooting 3s. We were behind once in the first minute of the game. We were tied once. We led for 38 minutes and some seconds. The closest they got after the first few minutes was 12 points. Everybody and everything was working. Great defense. Looking forward to more of this next week and beyond.

It’s basketball. One bad game doesn’t equal a bad season. We have an excellent team. That is better than it was last year, Year after year. Questioning the job of the guy who improves the team year after year seems stupid to me. Let’s revisit this when we’ve began a decline like grass did.
