Bama is afraid if they play an instate school they may lose a fan or even worse someone may actually spend 2 dollars somewhere else.

An instate school would bring higher ticket prices and more butts in the seat. I don't get it. People practically give away tickets when they play UTC or whatever.

Just out of curiosity, is there a published policy that specifically states that? I know it's been mentioned here for years, was just wondering.

Rumor has always been it was a Bear issue. Then little bear, the one who owns Bryant Bank, has pushed extremely hard to keep the policy.
If JSU beat UAT, they have a lot more issues than losing a fan. Someone in the administration or athletic office may lose their life. Doubt it would go that far but a job would have to be lost.
The bigger issue is Montgomery could make it change but JSU supporters and other school supporters keep voting in the same old folks who are against a change. Afraid UAT will not send them a few tickets to their games.

It has NEVER happened so the policy is obvious. It is also obvious that since it has never changed thru multiple athletic directors that important people get the word to the AD that is the way we do things. I can only guess that is driven thru both arrogance and fear. I would respect it if they also chose not to play any FCS school but they do.

Didn't Saban say something a few years ago during a press conference to the effect of he'd like to play in-state teams. It blew up, very briefly, on FCS and G5 discussion sites, and then was quickly forgotten, since there was no follow-up by any in-state media outlet. If there were not an unspoken policy about Bama not playing in-state schools (other than Auburn) that story would've had more legs. AL.com would have multiple stories and blog posts speculating who would be first to land on the Tide's schedule, what it could mean for the state's smaller budget programs, and maybe even some what-if's about the ramifications of a potential Tide loss. Broadcast outlets would ask about it every time a new schedule was released, especially given UAB's recent surge to relevance. This doesn't happen. And it doesn't happen because those media outlets know where their bread is buttered. And Saban has never mentioned it again, even in passing, because someone above him quickly communicated to him that such talk was verboten, even for someone of his standing.

Troy offered to play them. They said no. The policy is real. They played Samford 100 years ago, but that's about it.
