I really want to write this up to our staff being the new kid on the block.
Even with the article, on paper it seems we put together a pretty good recruiting class this season, so I'll draw my conclusions based on the on-the-field performance rather than a random web article.
The AL isn't exactly known for having the most accurate polls.
TL;DR: We haven't played a down yet. Let's hold off on the alarm bells, shall we?

I bet we did much better in the WV area. But for me I’m only concerned with how we do on the field.

Think about I though. We will be FBS in 23. This year, we really couldn't afford to waste spots on high school kids we weren't 100% on.
I remember RR talking about the signing class, and he mentioned that we actually had more high school signings than he thought we would.
This year, we will have a full cycle, so I would expect the staff to be reaching out to high school staffs a lot more.
His strategy was to go to the portal and fill gaps. We will see if it works out.
Hopefully that's not just my own rationalization.

Given that they have Alabama listed as 3rd in a tie with South Alabama, I wouldn’t put too much stock in it.

More along the line of which ones are paying attention to the high school and forming a relationship. Alabama and Auburn do not have the need to gain the high coaches influence.

Your ok with the JSU staff not getting one mention or vote? I do find it alarming we havent even built a close enough relationship with any local schools to get a mention. If they are visiting the schools and not getting mention then a style assessment may be in order.

So mentions in the survey obviously aren't really tied too heavily to program success. If we win, I couldn't care less if Podunk High School's coach likes us.

If they are visiting the schools and not getting mention then a style assessment may be in order. Not concerned. We just got started with the new staff and we had to go after more transfers this year. I will go ahead and say that I am doubtful that we will be signing more than 3 or 4 state high school players per year going forward. There is a lot of talent in Alabama, but it's not all FBS talent. When you consider that AL, Auburn, and other SEC schools will take the best talent. Then we will compete with the other G5 state schools for the rest, there is not enough to go around. We will have to get more players from GA, MS, FL, and TN. It also appears that WV will be a recruiting ground for us now.

Alabama will produce as many or more than MS and more than TN. GA and FL have tons of competition, too. WV?, not sure it produces tons of FBS players but it might.
New staff, troy state, USA and UAB all have new staffs. UAB with the minimum change and real late should be discounted. Few programs with JSUs name recognition can get a lot of top level out of state athletes giving the close ones away without a fight will not be a good game plan.

Still think you're putting way too much stock into a random online poll. You do you. I'll wait until I see what HCRR and friends have been cooking up before I draw my conclusions.

If this was next year's poll, I'd be a lot more concerned. This year, nah. Chances are, in order to get as many as 75 responses to a poll like this, al.com probably started collecting responses months in advance. If a coach loved his relationship with John Grass and/or his staff, he probably didn't bring it up, since those guys were all gone. It's possible, even, that al.com's people tossed out any responses that did mention members of the Grass staff, since none of those guys were still at JSU. USA has a newer staff, but their head coach (a former GA at Jax State under Crowe, btw) was hired in 2020. This means he had at least 1-1/2 to 2 recruiting seasons to establish relationships. The head coach at troy state was hired around the same time as Rich Rod, but he's been on the trojans' staff before in recent years. His coordinators are new to Pike County, but -- importantly -- Caleb Ross, his Director of Operations and High School Relations, has been there in that same role since March 2021, and before that, was a successful high school coach in Alabama. So plenty of high school coaches know him. JSU turned over nearly its entire staff. The high school coaches who know our staff are all in West Virginia, Michigan, and Arizona. (As problems go, this is a nice one to have. We just need to cultivate the Deep South relationships, and we'll have a national reach.) That said, there's a LOT the current staff can learn from the coaches' comments on this poll. I can vouch for how active troy state's staff is. Those guys have put the entire southern half of the state on lockdown. They may not get every player, but they're in the Top 2 or 3 for every player they go after, and they've maintained that over at least two (maybe three) coaching staffs. (I'd also pay CLOSE attention to Liberty's staff. Those guys just stole a player from our own backyard.) If there's a silver lining, such as it is, it's this: So two of the five individual recruiters mentioned passed through our hallowed halls. We know JSU made an impression in the recent past. We just need to recapture that with the new staff. Which leads me to my question... Who here knew that Kurt Kennedy was replaced as JSU's Director of Recruiting by Cody Spoon back in June? I can't find any announcements or anything. Kennedy was tweeting about JSU up until the spring game, then went silent. Spoon picked up in June. Both twitter profiles say they're recruiting director. JSU clumsily replaced Kennedy's name and photo with Spoon's, but left Kennedy's bio up. (Awkward...) jsugamecocksports.com/sports/football/roster/staff/kurt-kennedy/22EDIT: OK, Spoon has his own page up as well, but without the bio. The link above is to Kennedy's old page. Still awkward. Anyway, here's Spoon's: jsugamecocksports.com/staff-directory/cody-spoon/321Anyone know what's going on here?
