Teams are going to have to decide whether they chase the money or the championship now. Oklahoma and Texas might have made a mistake.
First round games will be at home without titles or sponsors. The next round will be incorporated into existing bowl games. We will never see these games as a member of CUSA so it's already time to play big name teams, start saving up money, and make another move.

Since the new CFP playoff will include the 6 highest ranked conference champs and 6 at-large teams, does that mean we should adopt the phrase Power 6 and Group of 4? "P6" will only make sense if the 6 highest ranked conference champs are always from the same six conferences. Someone (not me) needs to look at the final regular season polls for past years and see how these ranked teams are distributed. We know the SEC, Big Ten, ACC, and probably even Big XII will always be there. The PAC will probably be there as well. That's five right there, leaving one final slot for the (current) "G5". But with Cincy, Houston, and UCF gone from the American, there's no guarantee the highest ranked team will come from there. The MWC should be strong, assuming it's not decimated by future expansion. But since you only need ONE team from your conference to be ranked higher than other G5s, CUSA and the Sun Belt have a solid shot as well. Some might make a case for the MAC. It's nothing if not intriguing. Spoiler alert: most of the at-large bids will go to teams from the SEC and Big Ten. Money and prestige are still the drivers for the mega conferences. Oregon would accept a Big Ten or SEC bid in a heartbeat, regardless of having a much easier path to the playoff by remaining in the PAC. Same goes for most of the small handful of teams who could legitimately be looked at by the mega conferences. As for the PAC... I think they still want to expand, they're just not happy with their selection. I don't think the MWC will make a move (i.e., poaching UTEP and NMSU) until Oregon and Washington have made a move from the PAC. So it's slowed and/or halted right now... but imho has nothing to do with the playoff. This is the (multi-)million dollar question. If the 12-team playoff proves to be ANYWHERE near as lucrative as March Madness, and if CUSA can sneak a team in from time to time, and especially if they can win a game while they're there, one would think it could be a lot of money. Of course, you also have to look at the impact on the current bowls. Will those games go up or down in value as a result of the expanded playoff? No predictions from me on this one. Just more questions to add to yours.

From 2017-2021, the sixth spot would have gone to the AAC. With those teams gone, it is decidedly the Mountain West.
AAC #12 UCF #7 UCF #16 Memphis #6 Cincy #3 Cincy
MWC Boise State #25 Fresno State #19 Boise State #25 San Jose State #19 San Diego State

Everyone will take a SEC or BIG invite. The next round may leave you at the alter so you want to be on the big boys boat.

What this really means is that 8 teams from the SEC and B1G will be in a playoff with the PAC , XII, ACC and AAC champs every year. But at least we are still in the second tier now as opposed to the third tier (FCS). I feared the Big 2 would break away, leaving the remaining P3 as the second tier and relegating CUSA, SBC, MWC and MAC down to tier 3.

I know it won’t be easy, but with 12 teams there is an outside shot for a CUSA team. If Boise and other G5 teams can finish top 12, it isn’t impossible to fathom we might at some point… win a p5 money game and go undefeated… nothing we haven’t done before.

I don’t think so. Louisiana, Southern Miss, WKU, and others have been highly ranked. Cincy of course… Arkansas State was too 10 at one point. Winning and looking impressive can get us there.

A ranked team hasn't been in the CUSA championship game since #24 Southern Miss beat #7 Houston in 2011.
