Paywall.
Are they actually improving the stadium or is it just an expansion to the dorms?

From the other board: Per Anniston Star article on Tuesday, July 20th. The BOT approved $80 million dorm expansion of three floors above the field house and three floors above the old home side of the stadium and Trustee Circle. The dorms will hold 385 students. The dorms will pay for themselves. JSU will then be able to terminate the $4 million a year lease for 500 students living at The Point Apartments. Construction to begin in January 2022. Completion in 2023.
The article also stated that the plan is to include a 65k sq ft dining hall in this project. The current food service vendor will put up $7 million towards the project in September and another $20 million over twenty years.
The Randy Owen Center (ROC) also was allocated $50 million. Estimated completion by October 2023.
Two renderings looked really good. No mention of stadium seating capacity. It looks like the dorms will have club Level seating inculed.
Can't to see more info from AD.

Increase or decrease in seating capacity? We would be foolish to add more seats. 24k is plenty and we rarely come close to capacity unless you count covid capacity. I get the need for more housing but is a new dining hall really needed? Jack Hopper got renovated twice in my 4 years and last time I was there it had been redone again.

NOTE: I'll put the ROC rendering in the Southerners forum so the two discussions won't get muddled. The renderings are essentially the same as the ones leaked last April. The exterior shot is almost exactly the same (other than cosmetic details unrelated to the architecture). The angle from inside the stadium (from the southeast corner, looking northwest) is the same, but much higher resolution. Both can be seen below: The big takeaways from the article: - The renderings are not final. Architects are still working on the structure and what all it will encompass. Not in the article, but easy to deduce: final stadium capacity won't be known until the architects are done. EDIT: @ericdavis on GJS says the final capacity is expected to be 29K.
- The project will be essentially cost neutral, since the dorms will allow JSU to end a $4M a year lease with The Pointe, dorm fees will be collected, and Sodexo is contributing a substantial wad of cash for the dining hall which will be part of the expansion. A "free" stadium expansion would be awesome if they can pull it off.
- Construction is expected to begin in January, and they hope to have it completed by Fall 2023.

I prefer to think of it as a "Stadium Upgrade", as opposed to an "Expansion". Just eyeballing it, it looks like we'll potentially lose some seats to the N, offsetting those losses with additions to the West.
It does look like a sweet project, and I look forward to seeing it come to fruition. :-)

(troy state's stadium holds 30,420.) This certainly isn't going to be a major 10K-20K increase in seating, and honestly, we wouldn't need that anyway, even in FBS. EDIT: @ericdavis on GJS says the final capacity is expected to be 29K.

I like the concept, but don't love the 60's flat roof look of the dorms. I would prefer they make the top of the dorms another row of suites/club level and/or a possibly roof top viewing area. That could make it a bit more "modern" looking and tie it in better with the existing home side.
But kudos to the administration for figuring out a way to do this project without a major fundraiser.
The stadium should have a great game day feel when full.

I'm hopeful that the final renderings will be improved over these. Flat roofs and boxy, blocky buildings are not the design I'd want, even if we got the whole package for free. Someone needs to get a decibel meter out to the Snow this fall and see how loud the crowd is, so we'll have something to compare it to post-expansion. (And Southerners too.)

From Greg Seitz on the bird site:
"The new dorm and dining will be built on the west end of the stadium replacing the current field house. We will have a new space in this facility for football."

The Southerners in this stadium will be otherworldly loud.

But will the sidelines be expanded?

But will the sidelines be expanded? Thought the same thing. Even 5 more feet on each sideline would be welcomed. Also, need some extra room at the end zones. It is a tight fit!
