With the important caveat that I'm not basing this off any first- or second-hand information and it's simply a gut feeling:
1) I don't believe high school coaches with no prior college experience will be considered as HC. Maybe -- maybe -- as upper-tier assistants/coordinators, but not HC.
2) I don't believe FCS coaches will be considered for HC, except in the extremely rare case that they've won one or more NCs. Since SHSU and JMU are moving up, that leaves NDSU's coach, and I don't think he's leaving the frigid north.
3) I believe P5 assistants will be strongly considered. P5 assistants with collegiate HC experience at any level will be considered even more strongly.
4) I believe former FBS HCs (P5 or G5) will be strongly considered.
5) A losing P5 record will be overlooked, if the coach had a winning record at the G5 level, or the coach stood out for recruiting, fund raising, or one or more facets of the game even in the face of those losing P5 seasons. Think a defensive minded HC whose defenses were Top 10 quality every year, but whose offenses consistently averaged less than 20 ppg. (His former OCs would not be hired here.)
6) I believe G5 coordinators will be strongly considered, but only in cases where they have had a real, verifiable impact on the program and/or are clearly in charge of playcalling for their unit. For example, an OC working for a defensive-minded HC, who calls the plays, and whose teams consistently score 30+ ppg, dominate in ToP, have won multiple games in the closing minutes (i.e., 2-minute drill), and have recruited multiple players now contributing in the NFL. A DC working for an offensive-minded HC would also work. Just adjust these criteria for D. You get the idea.
7) I believe NFL coaching experience will be a huge plus, but only if combined with collegiate coaching experience at the FBS level or successful HC experience at the sub-FBS level.
8) I believe the likelihood of remaining at JSU long-term is a plus, but won't really move the needle. I've previously used CBC as an example. One would've thought he'd be a long-term hire, until the UAB job opened up and the Blazers tripled his pay. JSU's admin knows from experience that ties to JSU don't really matter when big money is at stake. They'll be willing to overlook a lack of ties if it means bringing in a coach capable of winning the CUSA championship and/or taking us to a bowl game, even if they fully expect that coach to take the first big job that comes his way. What will matter most is his ability to build the foundation for the *program* to enjoy long-term FBS success.
9) Coaches who smash pumpkins during the interview will be hired immediately. (But there must be video.)

Haven't really seen that brought up on some of the candidate threads. Wouldn't that be a consideration from both sides?

So 1 would still leave Niblett, King, Smith and Nix under consideration. Not sure if Freeman has ever coached in college.

I like Number 5. But I believe in a solid defense first. I hate a high flying offenses. I believe Matt Entz has won one NC his 1st year. Since then there appears to have been a decline for the bison. He's still iffy in my book I need another year or two form an opinion.

He's still iffy in my book I need another year or two form an opinion. My main knock on Entz is that he did not build the ungulate program, and as you've said, he has (so far) failed to maintain it at the same level. I mean, it's a stupid high level. But the guy before him seemed to maintain it no problem. Regardless, I don't think he's ready to leave the frigid north to experience the joys of an Alabama August. That's the main issue.

How the hell is David Blackwell not on y'all's radar? He's my #1 pick. Blackwell has been high on almost every list* of potential coaches I've seen. This thread was started for *confirmed* coaches that anyone had heard about. It wasn't just a wish list. * He was notably absent from the Gadsden Times list. But the Gadsden Times writer isn't a poster on here, afaik. On my computer this thread is on page 10. I have only noticed one "confirmed" person.

I'm just gonna assume the GT doesn't know what their talking about, per usual. With the way the university has been going as of late, I'm optimistic we can afford better than a subpar FCS assistant. Why? We were one of the better-paying gigs in the FCS for a HC, and the budget will no doubt be increased for a FBS coach. We may not be in the $1m range, but it will be over $500k certainly. Grass' base salary was 300k in 2017. Chadwell at Coastal is only $319k. App State pays $750k. The average FCS salary is like $240k, so Grass was definitely above the average. Chadwell was paid less than $200k at FCS. I know we aren't made of money, but you can bet we will bump to $500k+ if we have to. This is the state of Alabama after all. I said "Can"

Why, just why can’t we give Paul Johnson a call? I know he’d probably say no thanks, but…. He just might consider us. He would be a great pick in my book. I'd be outraged if we settled for the triple option while transitioning to the FBS. It has its place among schools that have a hard time attracting top athletes (Military academies, schools with higher admission standards). But it's awful football. Well KSU is 3-0 against us with it. GSU has notched some National titles with it. What have we done without it? I’m not saying he is the one and only choice I’d have, but to be outraged by that choice? Honestly, what has our version of RPO done for us beside get us a fist-full of oversized OVC rings?

Well; I recommended Major Applewhite and that got dismissed so let’s go for Dan Mullins from Florida he could get us to the next level

Georgia Southern is a model of FBS success I definitely want to see us emulate. How about we go with something that isn't a gimmick and get a power run game and a pro style offense.

We'd be sending the wrong message to recruits if we shifted to a triple option. It would devestate the transition to FBS. Schools do that when they can't attract more athletic players. It's an offense that relies on discipline, which we haven't shown a lot of in recent years. It runs on efficiency, not athleticism. We'd essentially be telling the best talent to choose anywhere but us. Yes, we struggle against it, as do many schools. It's a novelty. If people saw it every week, it wouldn't be as successful. But what we struggled against was disciple and efficiency, not athleticism. We out talent KSU and Wofford from years ago. Our own offensive woes were due to a lack of aggression in play calling. As demonstrated against EKU, our offense can succeed when we throw passes beyond the first down marker. A triple option offense is essentially relying on a made-you-look doctrine.

Get us a coach who can recruit and we will be fine. Plenty of players within 100-125 miles of campus that UAT and UGA dont want.
