Recall that after the spring game, CRR called the practice “gross” and stated 40-50 new faces would arrive before fall practice began. The portal closes mid-May so anyone should expect lots of transitions will be made in the near term. Doing the math reveals approx 20 guys being encouraged to seek opportunities elsewhere. Also getting the Covid year back (for upperclassmen) creates problems when trying to bring in HS players who can help us when games matter in 2024.
Wishing the 2 RBs all the best and a great new OL to run behind.

It shouldn’t be hard to beat 6-5 if he can’t do that with an expanded roster perhaps we made a terrible mistake. A complete overhaul of offensive and defensive systems is difficult. Overhauling culture is extremely difficult. Doing both in one season is a lot to take in. This season may resemble 2013. We should see improvement each week... I don't know if we have an Eli on the roster...much less Troymaine Pope and Jamarcus James. Undefeated or losing season... neither would surprise me or panic me. This 100000%. The record this year is irrelevant. A mediocre record shouldn't warrant panic. What should warrant panic is seeing a team make no progression throughout the duration of a season. Especially if we really are bringing in this many new guys. This is a brand new team. We're starting from square 1.

A player’s Dad just told me 35 players weren’t renewed. Wow!
Inquiring minds want to know who are on the list. Most will probably not be a surprise - but several who left were a big surprise to me.

It's a hard truth...
JSU can be loyal to players Grass recruited for the OVC and ASUN, or we can begin building toward the future with FBS-level players recruited by our current coach for CUSA.
The guys who contributed heavily to our program will find great landing spots, as others already have. Some will drastically improve their situation.
The guys who couldn't crack the two-deep in FCS don't stand a chance in FBS. Letting them go is the best thing we can do for them. Hopefully, they'll land at a level where their talents can be showcased.
I wish all these guys well.

That really sucks. I don't know of anything that goes on behind-the-scenes, but I was hoping that West could have his breakout year under the new regime.

Sounds like our offense is already set this early. Must have been some standouts.

Sounds like our offense is already set this early. Must have been some standouts. I'm sure Samuel and West left mainly for better opportunities. It'll be their last year, and there's no chance of playoffs (or bowls) this fall. Both have the stats and physical ability to make an FBS roster, and since they're both grad transfers, they can play anywhere. As for the other twenty gazillion offensive players entering the Portal, some may be similar to the above two, but others were probably told flat out, "You're not what we're looking for." It's probably safe to say there isn't a position on offense that can be described as "set" right now. (And the same can probably be said for the D, though they had a MUCH better spring.) Even as good as our kickers have performed so far, there's competition for those positions. I don't know if anyone has claimed the position as their own at this point. We probably won't have any idea what the fall roster will look like until they release the two-deep in August. I expect some surprises.

The way it should be, the best player gets the position.

I’m not a fan of just running a bunch of people off and 35 is a lot of people.
But this is a serious move up. We will be playing a full FCS schedule in 2023 and bowl eligible in 2024. We need to be ready with an FBS caliber roster. This isn’t like going from D2 to FCS where you have a four year transition period.
Best of luck to those leaving and thanks for your contribution to Gamecock football.

I don't like it either, but I do understand it. We honestly have one shot to do this right. If we stumble out of the gate, we'll spend the next decade playing catch-up. We don't have to be CUSA champs in our first year... That's not at all what I'm saying. I mean, sure... If we can pull off a winning season in our first season of bowl eligibility, that'd be an incredible boost to the program. But even if we fall short of that mark, as long as we're close to .500, it will signal to recruits and fans alike that we're going to make it in FBS. If on the other hand we go 0-8 in the conference, that's a huge hill to climb. Fans will vanish. Top recruits will be turned away. Even if we right the ship after a few seasons, the perception will be there: we don't belong at this level. Moving up was a mistake. Yadda yadda. No pressure or anything, but we've got to win. And if a player can't help us get there, we need to give his scholarship to someone who can.
